I’ve heard of kids changing their commitment in the late spring/early summer. How does that work when application deadlines have long passed? Assume this is from a D3 or non-binding D1 commitment (i.e., no NLI - which I know is no longer - or scholarship contract),
or one which is permitted due to a coaching change. Do schools consider athletes after the regular admissions deadline and review periods?
Depends on the school and sport, but yes, not uncommon at all. All I can say is poop happens.
Thank you. Do you know if it is only power 4 type programs that do this or are there D3s/Ivys that do it too? I’m guessing just the former but I’m not sure.
Yup
Whether the individual is successful in getting recruited after decommitting depends on a number of factors, but it does hapoen.
Probably uncommon for the relatively selective D3s like NESCACs, UAA (I’ve not seen that personally but hopefully others will chime in).
I know Ivies have brought in transfers well into the summer, not sure about first years…@politeperson does this maybe happen in track and field, which recruits relatively late?
While it happens, it can only happen if it was not an ED application. I don’t think it’s a common phenomenon with Ivy recruits but I do know of at least one specific REA athlete how walked after having his acceptance and receiving a late offer from his preferred school. I am of the opinion that is a particularly bad looking move because it leaves the coach without the opportunity to recruit someone else.
Pretty rare for Ivies to do this but it does happen. Much easier for coach if the recruit is in the applicant pool already.
Personally I wouldn’t make decisions now assuming that a supported slot will open up at an Ivy or highly selective D3 in the spring.
But for track and outside of selective schools, a lot of these decisions are made in the spring and summer.
I actually know of a player who fits both of these categories. Kid decommitted from a school where they applied ED as part of the deal because they thought that they had a Big10 school lined up. That never closed and they committed to a UAA school in May.
I don’t know of any cases of allowing a late application, do you?
After acceptance? You can change your ED status before acceptance.
After, it was a different high academic D3 and I believe that they used the ‘financial aid’ excuse. I’m not saying that it was on the right side of things but it was done when the possibility of the D1 scholarship came into view. It didn’t work out and they then scrambled and the UAA school was open to a D1 caliber player.
This was all driven by transfer portal moves at the Big10 team.
I would think that getting admission support at an Ivy after application deadlines would be a tough needle to thread. But if your kid can get accepted on their own, a coach could be agreeable to a walk on situation.
The NESCAC school I attend takes walk ons for most if not all of the teams. I have friends accepted in RD round that are now on varsity sports teams. I assume a decommitted athlete accepted in the RD round would be in this pool.
Although I assume they would not get the recruited athlete bump and would need to get in completely on their own.
If you signed an NLI, the only restriction was that you couldn’t go to another NLI school and play immediately or take a scholarship. You could always go to another school and sit out a year or go to a D3, NAIA, Ivy, service academy and play immediately. There are also so many exceptions that almost everyone gets one free release/transfer for athletics; the ED release may be trickier.
