I had my health insurance waiver denied last year (I had health plus) because it does not cover the location of my school. I am thinking of changing health insurance providers (Fidelis).
I am wondering what the process is like, how easy it is to do, and how long it would take for the new health insurance to be in effect. Thanks.

To find out about the details of changing medical insurers, you have to be in contact with the individual companies involved, as each has its own rules and policies. Under the policy we have had for decades, there is an ‘open period,’ during which people covered under Hs employer can research and switch insurers. Other than that open period, you have to wait for a `qualifying event,’ which includes birth of new child, marriage, divorce, turning a specified age, etc. The insurer you would like coverage from should have info about what is required to swap to their policy.

You need to check with your school to see what is specifically required for a waiver of its insurance coverage and be sure that whatever you switch to will meet these requirements, or you may end up with school insurance AND other insurance.

It’s a good idea to look into all of this as soon as possible, since the school year is rapidly approaching.

I think I have to have everything set / effective by September 1st. Do you think I’d make this date if I start looking into things right away? How long does it take for things to be effective after switching?

If you are buying an individual policy, you usually can start (and end) it at any time. Pick up the phone and call the insurance carrier that you are interested in, and ask about this.

This doesn’t exactly answer your question, but when you’re looking at different insurance providers, I would make sure that it is accepted at the clinics near your school and even at the student health center if your campus has one. Usually a quick phone call will provide you with an answer. :)
