Changing Industries

I’m a Chemical Engineer and by the time I have my MBA I will have had 10 years experience the Pharma/Biotech industry as an engineer of various levels and responsibilities, and will be 35 years old.

I have been contemplating my career path and am not sure if I care to go into engineering management or operations management and am debating optional industries. Are engineers with my background well received in other industries? I am thinking about either insurance or financial analysis, does this sound doable?

I have been debating contacting executive managers in these industries with engineering backgrounds to ask similar questions, would this be a good idea?

Some of my classmates (engineering background and age-wise) are in similar situation so the short answer is “it is do-able”. But you better have a convincing story and pitch.

It is definitely a great idea talking to alums of your school(s).
