Changing Info on Submitted Applications

My mom told me to put her down as Unemployed on the Common App (as she said she does not have an employer), but now that it’s time to fill out financial aid forms, it turns out that she is more self-employed (she DOES receive an income…).

Is there a way I can alter that piece of information on the Common App for the schools that I’ve already sent it out to? If I call them or email them, can I get it changed?

You can change it. Use postal mail, and include your Common App ID number in your letter. No need to tell them “my mom said…” just say you checked the wrong box.

I have to mail out a letter to every school I sent my Common App to just to change my mother’s occupation? And I can’t say I checked the wrong box because it’s something you type out, not a box.

Deleted duplicate post. Yay pages that are slow to respond. :p

Nope, you don’t have to. You can send them all an email message, which has a high probability of getting buried and not making it into your application folder – or you can just blow it off, which in truth has a low probability of affecting any of your admission results. You can probably think of other choices too. It’s a world of possibilities.

Then use your imagination. I don’t mean make up a lie, but think about how to present it in a less negative light. Brief, businesslike, and upbeat. To that end, I wouldn’t advise you to explain it the way you’ve explained it here (“my mom told me to write X, but she was wrong”). Sounds too much like you’re trying to avoid shouldering the blame for a mistake.

Ohh, I see. Thanks.

Do you think calling them can work?
