Yesterday, my son submitted his Common App. He put in Mechanical Engineering as his intended major. Had heard that submitting as DUS might increase chances. Can this be changed?
@junkpix Call Admissions today and ask them to change it to DUS. Unless he is a high stats kid, DUS will offer him a better opportunity.
Did he check summer admission start? It is a great opportunity for kids to adjust and get some credit under their belt with a small campus before the onslaught of fall.
He did check Summer. Thanks.
even If he gets a rejection to engineering he can request them to consider him for DUS later on
@airway1 @junkpix While that has been true (that you could ask for them to re-evaluate your file), it causes massive confusion - and essentially, doubles the workload for Admissions. Because they are trying to get through everyone that applied, and then all the “re-considers”. I wouldn’t count on being able to ask for them to review if if you received a deny.
If he wants to change to DUS - and doesn’t have super-high stats - it may make sense to do it now. I would ask though if he is still EA.
What you don’t want to happen is:
- applied EA Engineering. denied UP.
- asks for a change of major to DUS. Now you are in the regular pool. Admissions get more difficult as the colleges fill up.
good luck
@lucyvanpelt a friend’s kid was rejected by university park and got considered for DUS summer as per his request then fall start after getting summer start. It’s doable and yes it’s not fair but they allow it.
When we applied last year I gave my son one option fall University Park or he had to consider another university.
@airway1 oh I know they did it last year… but if your stats aren’t strong for Eng- why chance it? They may change the rules and say “a deny is a deny”. There are many changes over the last few years …
@lucyvanpelt True and from what I’m seeing it might be tough this year. Happy I don’t have to go through another application cycle for another 4 years.
