Changing major as soon as I get in?

I applied Pol Sci to Cal. I am not sure if I want to double major or just chance my major to Psyc. I plan on completing Psyc prereqs the first semester at Cal (which would guarantee me acceptance into Psyc as long as I have a 3.2). Can I do this at CalSO? How long do I have to wait?

Usually, you want to wait until sophomore year to change your major, given that you have taken all the prereqs with the required GPA. The reason is they need to see how well you actually do first. Having said that, people are admitted to L&S as Undeclared, so you actually don’t need to “change” your major at all since both Polisci and Psych are in L&S. Just take the Psych prereqs and apply as usual.

Edit: I see that you are a transfer. Well, in that case, you will need to declare Psych by the end of your first semester, or second semester if there are more than 3 prereqs missing. You can’t do anything at CalSO.

You can swap to the psych major, no problem.

First of all, when you’re admitted, you’re admitted to a specific college i.e. L&S in your case. That said, you are not admitted into your major choice. Whether you apply as a freshman or a transfer, you are only admitted to the college. If, for whatever reason, you decide you prefer psychology, you can switch Day 1 during CALSO. You won’t be able to declare then, but you will be paired with people within the same major (psych), and you’ll get to register for classes later in the day, with that group. Thus, I’d tell someone that you intend to switch to psych during CALSO.

Yes, to become a psych major you need a 3.2 GPA…but that’s a given if you’re applying into an impacted major like poli sci or psych. Once you have your prereqs done after your first semester or so, you can declare. Ideally you’d be declared by the time you’re a junior.

So yeah, you can do alot at CALSO, including getting into the psych group you want, registering for psych classes you want, and getting tons of info about the psych department, pending you join the psych major group during CALSO. In sum, I’d say it’s really easy to switch to psych. I was a transfer and switched from philosophy to psychology during CALSO, and by switch, I mean I switched my intended major. Philosophy isn’t even impacted. Switching from poli sci to psych should be a breeze. Just make sure one way or another you finish up those prereqs when you get to Cal.

Thanks to everyone here for your answers. I will follow your advice. Do you guys think I have a good chance of getting in Pol Sci 3.6gpa, full time job, UC transfer?
