Changing majors if deferred

If your child is deferred from the nursing program, can they ask to get in with a different major?

I would say yes.

HOWEVER,

Most direct admit schools, even if you get in as another major, there is usually zero chance changing into Nursing afterwards.

Second, if all your essays are composed based on your love for nursing, asking to change to something else is asking for rejection since you can’t submit new essays.

You can ask anything. Whether a school would allow is different. One student on another thread was deferred at Indiana and changed his major.

To me, major outweighs school. If you know it up front, this is your intention for life.

I’d find a school where you can study what you want because it will be your life many years ahead. This isn’t Poli sci vs business. This is something specialized, requiring a test passage/verification, etc.

Schools are substitutional - one can get the same education and potentially similar experience in many places.

Nurses come from all over, including internationally. I now ask them all when I go to the dr and when my dad was in the hospital last year. Rank seems to be irrelevant as demand far outstrips supply. But they don’t come without the proper education.

The other thing is - you were deferred, not waitlisted. Deferred does not = rejection whereas often a WL most likely does.

Good luck.

Thank you this is great advice. I read it to my daughter and it definitely made her feel better.

My dad was in a Las Vegas hospital owned by HCA - the largest ( I believe) hospital operator. It appeared Philippine trained nurses dominated.
