Changing my mind

I started college intending to major in Molecular Biology. I was interested in Cognitive Neuroscience too. After a quarter taking the classes and projecting my schedule, I realized the major would be too restrictive for my tastes – I wanted to experiment and take other courses! I ended up with 1/2 of basic Chem with Lab and 1/2 of Calculus completed.

I decided to become an English major, transferred a time or two, and eventually wound up at Cal. I have reconsidered my options and realized that while I love my subject and my degree, it’s just not what I want – I want to go back to where I was.

I have 6 classes left to take to complete my English major and 1 class left in GEs, and about 8 class slots to fill with an “average” schedule (that is, 16 units when 20.5 is the max without exception and the average-per-semester required for graduation in four years is 15).

I am considering staying an extra year (my normal schedule will have me graduating in Spring 08, having entered in Fall 04) in order to take the rest of the med school requirements – at Cal, I believe that would be another semester of Calculus (1B), 3 semesters of Chemistry (3A to finish basic chem, 3B and MCB102 for ochem), 2 semesters of physics (8A-8B) and 2 semesters of biology (1A-1B).

However, I am not entirely sure if this is the best course of action. Would a post-bacc program be more my speed? If I am interested in research but know that getting a double-major is pretty much impossible in the time provided, what would be my best option? What about if money is a big concern (EFC is high enough to leave ~$5k in COA, but actual ability to pay that is limited)? Any suggestions?
