Changing Residency in College

I currently live in NY, but go to college in MA. I’d like to change my residency to Mass. Not because of in-state tuition or anything like that. I have a disability and Mass has better social services then NY and being a resident of MA would make it easier to get the services I need. Does anyone know if I can use my college address as my permanent one? My grandparents also live in MA, could I use their address?

I am not an accountant or lawyer but I believe most states do not recognize college students as being residents since you do not have an established domicile. A dorm won’t count and with your grandparents address, you’re not paying any of the utilities/your name is not on the deed/lease.

Even if you somehow could get MA residency, it’s probably not worth it since in order to do this you would need to no longer be a dependent of your parents and then if they are paying your bills (e.g. tuition, meal plan, medical etc) it would be considered a gift subject to gift taxes if the total is above a certain amount (which OOS tuition in MA alone almost certainly is).
