Charlie Kirk shot dead

Is there a thread about this yet?

This is sickening. Awful for his family. He was obviously a very controversial figure. I feel very worried for America.

I’m pleased to see a joint statement from the College Republicans and College Democrats at my D’s school.

So the threats are now coming, not surprisingly. Some HBCUs are locked down and DNC headquarters received a noncredible threat.

My conspiracy theory: it was a professional hit and someone with very important connections was behind it.

It’s sad and predictable to see the recriminations that are now coming from all corners.

I believe Stockton University is currently in lockdown.

This isn’t how differences of opinion should be addressed.

I don’t understand why this is an “assassination” as opposed to another senseless killing.

Apparently there was a shooting near the campus, so this might be unconnected (still awful). Suspects at large still last I heard.

Yes…subject apparently entered the campus area after the shooting…thus the lockdown.

Horrible.

Student shot in the face. Possibly road rage incident. I’m so so tired of angry people with guns.

Use of the term as while not an elected official, he was very political such as similar to MLK yet opposite sides.

My legit first thought after a paid hit by President was his wife or something to do with her. I understand they were in attendance yet being so young unsure what they actually did see or would remember.

I did not closely follow him but had watched some clips through the years as I try to educate myself on issues on both sides. I feel sorry for his innocent children left behind.

A suspect has been arrested. Sadly it was his father who turned him in after the suspect confessed.

incredibly tragic

Additional info I read on the news about this (am just reporting facts I’ve read, not providing political commentary):

  • shooter’s father works in law enforcement
  • shooter messaged his roommate on Discord, saying how he had stashed the gun in a wooded area & other details.
  • Roommate voluntarily showed the Discord messages to law enforcement when questioned by law enforcement yesterday
  • shooter attended 1 semester at UVU in 2021
  • shooter is a 3rd yr electrician apprentice student at a community college in St George, UT
  • Law enforcement have stated that they intend to pursue the death penalty
  • shooter engraved messages on the bullets
  • shooter confessed to his dad. The dad tried to get him to turn himself in.

He is obviously a very distrubed individual. It will be interesting, and not in a good way, to see how things develop.

I’m personally extremely disturbed at the reaction of the administration, with no equivalent sentiment about Melissa Hortman. Saying they are going to monitor universities and punish them if they say the “wrong” things about Kirk is a clear infringement on 1st amendment rights.

alleged shooter attended Utah State University for 1 semester in 2021, not UVU or Utah Valley University in 2021.

Not just universities, but foreign nationals.

The response to the killing of a first amendment rights activist is … threatening punishment for the exercise of one’s first amendment rights. ???

My continued concern is the polarization and assumptions by the politicians and social media. There used to be a time where we would disagree with each other and go on our way. Now I feel our President has made hate and vilification of anyone who doesn’t agree 100% with your thoughts somehow acceptable as proof one is “American.”

I just watched the old video of when John McCain stopped a crowd member’s question noting how Obama was “an Arab” and grabbed the microphone to say no, he is a good man who just disagrees on some topics.

I just read a first profile of the killer in the NY Times. I hope this won’t be taken as political, because I mean to make a comment about mental illness. It very much sounds like the killer was having a first major mental breakdown of a serious disorder. We need more mental health resources for everybody–and the other thread on young men falling behind gives plenty of reasons why.
