Well, in my area/school district one of the required courses is Free Enterprise (which is an intro to economics for those afraid of communists), and it is usually paired with a Civics course. We have a 4x4 semester block schedule, and it works with civics one semester, and free enterprise the next. I took civics in 10th grade, but not free ent. Now my school doesn’t offer free enterprise, but still expects me to meet the requirement by retaking Civics (which now includes the free enterprise curriculum). How will colleges view the exact same course being taken twice even if my schedule is full of ap’s?</p>

If you can’t convince your school to let you out of it, just have your guidance counselor note the reason in your secondary school report.</p>
<p>I tried convincing my school, district, and state level officials to let me take AP Macro/AP Micro instead, but to no avail. Apparently Free Enterprise covers personal finances, which is absolutely positively necessary for a 15 year old to understand. And my counselor (whose IQ is the same as her age) lacks the competency to note such a reason.</p>
<p>Say that you’re a communist and that the class conflicts with your beliefs (about classes, haha), and that if you’re forced to take it, you’ll sue them all the way to the Supreme Court.</p>
<p>And when that doesn’t work, write it down for your guidance counselor when she’s handling the secondary school report so she’ll explain it. Otherwise, you should put it in the “additional information” section of your application.</p>

<p>You’ll probably have to yield to the coercive State (intended irony, as most “free enterprise” types detest government mandates) and retake civics. If your counselor isn’t up to the explanatory task, perhaps you could use this as a starting point for a college essay, by which I mean: Not just a simple explanation of why you retook a class, but a more ironic piece wryly showing that you, a 15 y.o. HS kid, understands freedom, responsibility, self determination and free enterprise better than your legislature does.</p>
