Charlotte, NC - what to do for a day?

Any suggestions for what to see and do for someone who’ll have a free day in Charlotte who’ll be staying downtown but have no car?

If you like NASCAR, the Hall of Fame is pretty impressive. There is the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art which is a nice collection. Next door to that is the Mint Museum. Good restaurants but no shopping to speak of. Also, starting next weekend there will be people carrying signs outside a certain Bank HQ - could provide some entertainment value there.

Getting around would be hard I would go to carowinds though it’s a theme park

Carowinds is only open on the weekends in October.

I haven’t been to the NASCAR museum, but have heard really good reviews about it. If you like NASCAR, you should try to find a way to get to Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord and get a tour of the Speedway - [Tours | Speedway | Charlotte Motor Speedway](Speedway Tours | Experiences | Charlotte Motor Speedway) Even if you don’t like NASCAR, the tour is good. The tour includes a ride on the track which is pretty amazing. If you’re going to be in Charlotte next weekend…watch out, it is race weekend. If that is the time that you have free, don’t bother going to the Speedway unless you want to go to the race. It’s crazy on race weekends.

The Blumenthal Peforming Arts Center is nice. Here’s the October schedule. [North Carolina Blumenthal Performing Arts Center Events](http://www.blumenthalarts.org/default.asp?blumenthal=41) There’s a great Irish Pub near the Blumenthal - [url=<a href=“Rí Rá Irish Pubs - A real Irish local pub and restaurant”>Rí Rá Irish Pubs - A real Irish local pub and restaurant]R

Go down to the BoA headquarters and throw spitballs at it?

What day are you going to be in Charlotte? Easiest and one of the best things to do would be to walk up to the Bechtler museum and check out the sculptures in the park across the street. There are several wonderful pieces by Niki de Saint Phalle that have been there several months but will be removed next Saturday. The new Mint museum and the Harvey Gantt Center (African American museum) are right there. The current exhibit at the Mint and the Gantt Center are works by Romare Bearden. I recommend the NASCAR Hall of Fame only for really big fans. If you are only mildly interested in NASCAR you might be disappointed. Friends have enjoyed taking a Segway tour of the area - you might want to try that.

Thanks. I can’t remember the day although it’ll be during the week in a few weeks. This is someone else going - not me. I’d definitely go to the Nascar museum but this person going (female) hasn’t watched a race so probably wouldn’t be interested in that. She’d probably be interested in the museums so I’ll mention those.

I think there’s supposed to be a historic plantation somewhere around but maybe it’d be too difficult to get to?

This may be the plantation you mentioned - [Latta Plantation](http://lattaplantation.org/latta/index.php?page=home) It is not in the city. She would need a car to get there.
