I dislike coffee so H makes his own (I clean the maker parts when I clean the kitchen, though- he notices the difference). For one person the 4-5 cup Mr Coffee has been good for him over the years. He used to use the gold filter but now prefers paper- the amount of sediment would be a logical reason for preferences. He also has used a French press but I suspect the effort wasn’t worth it for him. He (horrors for some of you) makes instant. Plus he likes the dark roasts.
Easy to find Mr Coffee at good prices, full size or one person.
addenda- I do the cleaning because I am much more thorough!
I use a Mr. Coffee. We did receive a 12 cup percolator years ago and still use it every once in awhile. It’s just a pain to clean. Delicious coffee, though.
@conmama I was just about to write how easy it was to clean my percolator! All the “pieces” are metal, and I toss them in my dishwasher every so often…except the actual pot…which I rinse out daily, and clean more thoroughly every week.
Mr. Coffee must have improved their design. The last one I had dripped when you poured a cup.
I had a Braun that worked very well. But then, I also had a cuisinart that worked well and didn’t catch on fire.
@thumper1 . It’s just a pain with all the pieces. Then you have to dump the grounds. Unplug the percolator to clean it. We don’t use it everyday, so getting it out, cleaning all the pieces, cleaning the pot, drying everything and putting away makes us not use it unless we have company…sometimes.
And that’s what @deb922 is looking for…something to use when she needs a whole pot of coffee…like when she has guests.
Different strokes for different folks. Frankly, I hated cleaning my drip coffee makers. To really do a good job, you had to take the whole basket arrangement off of the machine.
I mistakenly bought a basket coffee maker when I recently replaced my old drip cone version. I don’t notice any different in flavor and actually like it better as the cone (on more than one brand) tended to get out of place and overflow much more easily than the basket. May be my (and my family’s) incompetence in placing the cone, but the basket seems easier to use.
^^^ I had that pot for about 5 years before passing it onto D2 - it lasted her another 2 years! Made pretty good coffee - said this average coffee drinker, not a coffee snob. Not fancy and sort of basic looking - but very reliable. BUT it is smaller and to me “one cup” is actually what coffee makers call “two cups”!
I’m not a coffee drinker, but DH is. We have a Mr. Coffee, 10 or 12 cup (I don’t recall which) with a gold filter. He’s satisfied with it. Honestly, the quality of the coffee you put in the coffeemaker probably makes more of a difference than the coffeemaker itself.
So I cleaned the bunn last night. With vinegar. According to the directions. Made another pot this morning. There was still vinegar in there. . So I ran more clean water through.
Last night I ran the system 4 times. Another 3 today.
I’m not sure I’m going to keep this bunn even if I can get it cleaned up. I hate that it heats water continually. Seems silly when most days I use my nespresso.
I have a farberware percolater in my amazon cart. I’m still contemplating other drip makers. And I definitely appreciate everyone’s opinions. They are very helpful
H has a small Hamilton Beach coffee maker he got from my dad who won it as a door prize. It suits H’s needs. We mostly keep it unplugged, as we often dine out for breakfast or he may just skip coffee.
Bunn isn’t the ideal set up for very sporadic use.
For intermittent use, you can turn it off/on but then have to wait about 15 minutes to heat up the tank. Or leave it on continuously for days so you’ll have hot water on demand when you finally want to make a pot.
Bunn is really optimized to make pot after pot of good hot coffee FAST. Which is why they are in every diner and office.
For one big pot a week, electric percolator is your tool.
I use the cone type filter coffee pot I got MANY years ago when I subscribed to the Gevalia coffee club. (Is that even a thing anymore?)
I have a fancy espresso machine that grinds the beans for each cup, which I use every day and I LOVE.
BUT, my husband uses a 4 cup Krups machine that I got for my first wedding, back in 1987. Every once in awhile I send my friend a note letting her know that machine is still chugging along.
We have a Hamilton Beach programmable coffee maker, bought almost 5 years ago. I’m not a coffee purist but it seems to make an acceptable pot of coffee. Theoretically it makes 12 cups but we have to make almost 10 cups to fill our four large mugfulls (two for me, two for DH). I like the fact that it has a rotating base to make it easy to move around, a removable water tank that I can fill under the faucet, different brewing options, and a basket filter. I also like that the automatic stop and serve function has always worked, unlike our previous coffee maker. Nothing like turning your back and having coffee all over the counter! The only issue we have is that the warming plate sort of corroded, but I communicated with Hamilton Beach and they assured me it’s only a cosmetic issue, not a functional one.
@basket That Amazon $59 price is a nice deal on the Capresso compared to Kohl’s $90 full price. It is often on sale at Kohl’s and then with the 30% off the best deal I have gotten is $40.
