Cheap groceries near BU

My daughter was hoping to have breakfast in her dorm room during the school year and we were wondering how expensive the local markets are. Where do most kids pick up snacks and are they pretty expensive?

Shaw’s Star Market is a very large grocer that is within walking distance to campus. The prices are comparable to your local super market. Super 88 is an asian super market with some really nice ethnic foods, if your looking for that sort. Most people buy things from the Campus Convenience that is adjacent to the dorms - the prices there tend to be a smidgen higher, but not terrible. Campus Convenience is more like a 7-11 in its selection.

“near” depends on where your daughter lives - East campus or West Campus? Because the Star market is in West Campus, so a good 15 minute walk (or longer in the snow) from East Campus… Of course you can take the T, but that involves paying the fare to/fro…
Just something to keep in mind.

The Shaws is “near” East Campus…(from Kenmore, no more then a 7 minute walk)

Yeah, to clarify, there is a Star Market Shaw’s right past West Campus on Comm Ave. There’s also a Shaw’s in East Campus if you walk near South. It’s across the street from the BerryLine up past Fenway. So, whether East or West, you have one relatively close by.

Also near South Campus there’s Johnny’s Foodmaster which is closer than Shaw’s

If she prefers a Trader Joe’s, there is one east of BU along Boyleston (near Berklee). Another larger Trader Joe’s is located across the BU bridge and then left about 1/4 mile. The Boyleston one is closest to the dorm that is at Kenmore square, so it’s walkable, but not right around the corner. She could take the T there and back in the winter to stock up on breakfast food, but the walk is nice because she can also walk down Newbury Street on the way there and back (a little shopping).
