Cheap off-campus housing that allows a separate internet plan from the dorm?

Hi there, all. I’m currently a student at UCF possibly going into my last year next year.

I was wondering if any one knew of any off-campus housing that allows for an internet plan that is separate from the dorm? That is to say, essentially, you’d have your own internet connection and it is not being filtered by the dorm’s network admins?

The reason I ask of this is because Collegiate Village Inn (CVI) where I’m currently staying and have been staying for the past few years has gone a bit too far and has blocked a number of sites that I frequently visit. In addition, the internet situation here is horrible, as I frequently report less than 1 MB/s for downloads. YouTube videos take forever to download. In addition, everyone is behind a shared IP address, so I’ve ended up getting banned from sites where someone else in the dorm has done some mis-conduct.

I was going to e-mail the manager and ask why sites such as rapidshare and depositfiles have been blocked. Anyone familiar with either of those two sites know that they are merely filehosting sites. If any illegal content is detected, the moderation team at both sites remove the files. My guess was that it was a bandwidth issue.

Any way, I’d like to move to a dorm that either has a better internet policy than the one currently at CVI, or a dorm that allows the option of having your own subscription set up in your room, possibly. While CVI is a cheap place to live and living expenses have proven to be low, I feel like a caged hamster every time I go online for I can’t surf the web like a normal human being.

I dont know if any places allow you to have your own connection like that but i can tell you this, im pretty sure no other off campus apartment filters it like CVI. They just have wireless routers and let you do your own thing. I have a friend who lives at Jefferson Village and I visit frequently to download music and games for my wii since on campus we dont have wifi in the dorms. so far the connection has always been fast, and the few times its been spotty, you are also allowed to connect via ethernet cable which is always fast. Apart from being cheap, most people have told me that CVI is kind of a dump compared to most places. that could explain why they are limiting you so much.

to be fair, CVI is a bit of a dump. I was willing to overlook both that and the shoddy and slow connection throughout my years at UCF because of its affordability and the meal plan. But now all of the cons are outweighing the pros, so I feel like I should move elsewhere.

If there aren’t any places that allow a separate internet plan, could some people give me more insight on the internet policies at various locations? (if any sites are blocked, average internet speeds, firewall issues, etc?)
