Cheating and Winning the President's Scholarship and Terry Fox Humanitarian Award

cheating never wins? sometimes it wins, and wins big. this is not a lesson in ethics, but a story that’ll make u hit your head your head on the wall on how things like this get away.

a classmate of mine out of nowhere became arguably the most successful graduate of our year. i attended a very strong public school in Toronto (Canada).

anyways - we all knew who all the super-stars were. but when all the acceptances/scholarships came out, all the elite students were stunned to find out that one of our graduates won the President’s scholarship to Guelph University http://www.uoguelph.ca/</a>, some $20 000.

further, he also won, arguably the most prestigious HS scholarship in canada, the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award, valued at IIRC, $25 000 A Glimmer of Hope - The Terry Fox Foundation. his total scholarship money was $45 000 - absolutely unheard-of crazy money go be given to someone to attend a public canadian university.

all of us were wondering, who is this guy? turns out he was reasonably academically strong. he probably ranked about 15th in our year in terms of average - but it was known he retook a lot of his senior courses, so that his marks would be higher (to apply to ontario unis, they only take your highest mark). but the kicker was this…

we later found out through friends of his, that when putting together his application, he treated it as a farce. kind of like, ooh - what would some superstar do? so he started writing a parody of an application - claiming volunteer stuff, saving communities, saving people’s lives etc. it IS known that he WAS active in volunteering and stuff, but it is reported he treated the applications as a big satire. he never thought his scholarship applications would be taken seriously - but it turns out, he ended up winning them. he even was interviewed on national TV.

after the news broke, several teachers in our school (NINE OF THEM) wrote a joint letter to the scholarship-awarding bodies. they said that the student apparently made a lot of claims about doing certain things and running certain events/clubs, and that his claims were false. all nine teachers signed. i’m quite sure they sent the letter to the Terry Fox fund, and it may have also been sent it to Guelph. the reply… you won’t believe this.

the scholarship bodies replied saying that the scholarship decisions were final. they basically had no mechanism to cancel a scholarship. so in other words, they gave the money, and despite evidence showing that their candidate didn’t do what he claimed to have done in order to win the scholarship in the first place (the major emphasis being, showing ethical conduct!), they didn’t do anything.

true story. i sometimes wonder where that guy is now. i’m assuming he went off to medical school and is now a doctor somewhere. part of me wants to get this story back on the front-burner, and have his license/degrees all revoked.

cheating like this shouldn’t win. but it did.

google him. if he’s a doctor or some other successful profession, he would probably show up.

that lucky lucky son of a gun. it’s like that story of the kid who cashed a fake multimillion dollar check and succeeded, except this time he got to keep the money.

Well, if word spreads enough, employers should blacklist him.
