I was caught cheating in my last exam after the course is over… I found out that I was caught when my professor posted a feedback of you have shared illegal files with Ms. XX and received an zero for this exam. I’m not sure of the professor reported me for cheating or not because he caught us when he inputted the grades. I wanted to ask what are the consequence for first time offenders and in what time would I be notified after being reported.

It depends on the professor, whether he told the department, and whether he told the honor board.

I handle certain cases individually, such as giving 50% credit or zero credit, depending on the type of cheating. If there are multiple people involved, and electronic devices, usually we have to report to the honor board.

So - if I gave you a zero on an exam, I might not report you to the honor board. And you should use that as a lesson not to cheat.

However, I always give the student the choice to go to the honor board if they disagree with the decision. One student wanted to do that, but upon talking to him, it was really clear he was cheating and just was offended about being caught, and it never went to the honor board.

As a professor, I like to have some control over whether cheating or plagiarism is reported. Hope that your professor feels the same way, and if you are resigned to deal with getting a zero and no honor board report apparently, consider yourself lucky and don’t cheat again.
