Why do you think BU is a good fit for you?
Ever since I was a toddler I would tear apart my toys and later, the new bought electronics just to see how all those little pieces matched. Whenever the toaster or the television would stop working I would analyze them until I would find the means to make them useful again. Because I am a girl, I was automatically supposed to play with dolls and I believe everyone was a little bit disappointed when I revealed my passion for “playing” with screwdrivers and wire cutters. As I grew up, I realized that I can further develop my childish passion and so I turned to research and I am still fascinated about the discoveries I can make when I engage in inquiring activities. I wish to study at BU not only because I find the Political Science Program really challenging, but because I’ve always been fascinated about research and BU offers me the opportunity to satisfy my thirst for researching. I am positive that, at BU, I will enrich my knowledge about the complex web of politics and at the same time, I will appease my carving for scrutinizing without tearing apart any electronic device.

What is the purpose of higher education? Technological change, economic uncertainty, and political divisions have brought new urgency to a long-standing debate about this complex question. Some argue that college should foster self-discovery, empathy, citizenship, clarity of thought, and elegance of expression. Others contend that college should promote practical skills, problem-solving, and career-oriented training. Write an essay of no more than 500 words taking a position on this debate.

I have been thinking how to start my essay to make it interesting, to catch your attention and without realizing the days passed by and I am now sitting at my desk on a Christmas Day trying to find out what the purpose of higher education is. Even if usually procrastination is not a choice for me I am now in this position because as straightforward as is may seem, the question “What is the purpose of higher education?” is extremely difficult to answer. There is an infinite number of possible correct answers to this prompt, but not all of them seem correct to me.
Why do we struggle so much in life for academic titles? what is the point of it all? I could simply say that the purpose of higher education is to broaden your thinking. You can experience a wide cultural and social scene, make new friends and study subjects that really interest you. I could also say that a higher-education teaches you how to succeed in a rapidly changing world, that is shows you how to become more innovative, how to stand out from the crowd. Or I could state that a higher education qualification leads to increased earning potential. After graduation, you will be able to follow a rewarding career, you will get a stable job which will give you economical satisfaction.
I may say that the purpose of higher education is to give students the chance to thrive, regardless of their family background, sex, religion or political beliefs. Or I could argue that at college or at university you learn to express yourself in an elegant way, to empathize with those who have similar life-stories and to understand those who have completely different life experiences than you. But what matters the most is that higher education teaches you how to make choices of your own, how to set your goals and how to achieve them.
I strove and strove to fine one brilliant, note-worthy, impressive answer to the question but the simple truth is that the more I think about it, the more I favor those who argue that college should foster self-discovery, empathy, citizenship, clarity of thought and elegance of expression. These trivial qualities are what makes a person great. Self-discovery leads to self-discipline, empathy leads to compassion, citizenship leads to integrity, clarity of thought leads to intelligence and elegance of expression, well, it definitely leads to conquering the world.

I really like your first essay! I thought you were heading toward the “I want to be an engineer path” at first but your explanation of striving to be a political science major was great. It connected to your anecdotes well.

For the second essay, this chunk “I have been thinking how to start my essay to make it interesting, to catch your attention and without realizing the days passed by and I am now sitting at my desk on a Christmas Day trying to find out what the purpose of higher education is. Even if usually procrastination is not a choice for me I am now in this position because as straightforward as is may seem, the question “What is the purpose of higher education?” is extremely difficult to answer.” is basically useless. I know you are trying to capture the reader’s attention but it didn’t work on me. This type of deal is highly subjective I guess. So good luck and just take everything I said with a grain of salt.
