D will take the train to Providence while my wife and I drive. The plan is to check some baggage on Amtrak. (Yes, we know that there is only one train per day that allows checked baggage.) It all seems too easy. Are there any reasons not to check baggage?

The one time someone I knew did it, it worked out fine.

It worked like a charm for us. We checked the baggage at our home station the night before. It went to Providence via the overnight train. It took all of two minutes to pick up the baggage at Providence. We didn’t even have to park the car. For us, this was a better alternative than using a roof rack or a trailer.

Great that it worked out so well! Good luck to your D - I’m jealous!
