cheese of the month

Anyone have experience with a cheese of the month club? We have a family member that is hard to buy for but loves cheese. We thought a cheese of the month (maybe every other month) would be fun and tasty. Any suggestions for tried and true companies?

I’ve heard that Wallace & Gromit really know their cheeses.

Of course you can get good cheese from Wisconsin companies, but they will not ship during the warmest months for obvious reasons.

I did the cheese of the month thing when I was in grad school. It was a treat for a starving grad student. It was fun to get. cheese was decent. i remember liking their mustard seed mustard.

I’m looking at two companies now and both will ship 3 different cheese varieties every month or every other month for however long I want. I’m a little discouraged as both are very expensive. Not that I mind the cost, but the value is not there. Maybe it will be more enjoyable for me to figure out a method to ship it myself, then I could pick out cheese I know is good. Our relative is within a two hour drive, so maybe USPS priority mail would work.

^That’s what I always think when I see those products - expensive and I could do it myself. BUT the question is, do you really feel like monkeying around with someone’s Christmas present ALL YEAR long? Plus, talk about expensive! Priority Mail! And even three days might be too long for some cheeses to be unrefrigerated.

I always love Harry & David products. They have several outlet stores and they often have products in TJ Maxx and Marshalls. Why not just buy some of their stuff, send it and be done? I’d love that for a gift! Harry & David’s Pepper and Onion Relish is really good - use it on chicken or vegetables or add it to cream cheese with crackers. All their appetizers and sweets are good. Another company that makes really good stuff like that is Sable & Rosenfeld. All their stuff is tasty.

Good luck.

Im doing this for H who LOVES cheese. Im using Murray’s Cheese Shop in NYC(recommended in an article, which is where I got the idea) but am not doing an “of the month gift”, they have one time gifts with varieties…like American,French, paired for wine, etc…,so many in fact its hard to choose which. Also they have gift certificates, books about cheese, even classes if the recipient is in the NYC area! Shipping is expensive b/c of the time constraints of a perishable package i guess.

I don’t know the companies, but as a cheese lover I’d love getting this as a present!

I have used www.cheesemonthclub.com for 3 years, sending cheese to parents and in-laws. All folks in their 70s and 80s. The club is easy to use, seems to be reliable and the recipients are always pleased. I’m sure there are other sites that are just as good or better, but this has worked for us.

This is a little known treasure. http://www.cowsoutside.com/</a> I’ve never ordered it by mail. You need to be a real cheese lover 'cause this stuff is intense but wonderful.

Good suggestions! cathymee, as a matter of fact the recipient is in Manhatten.

Glasses, will look further into your suggestion. cheesemonthclub is one that we’re considering.

Thanks!

“Im using Murray’s Cheese Shop in NYC”

Murray’s is the absolute last word in cheese in the United States. If you’re serious about cheese, they are the only choice. I’d say they were the best on the continent, but the Quebecois may have connections in France that Murray’s doesn’t have (not to mention more forgiving import laws).

Ok,Murray’s for me next year, thanks.

Charles VII camembert. Oh wait, that stuff is illegal in the US. Oops…

For NYers, I love to order custom baskets from Zabars, which they will deliver. They have so many great foods at great prices. I include some smoked fish, they have a big range and all is fabulous, a Juniors cheesecake (considered by many the best in NY), an amazing assortment of olives, any cheese you can think of, great cookies, etc. For a great present add caviar, they have the best prices, a kitchen appliance or pretty copper pot or pan. They will actually send anywhere in the states. Zabars.com.
