Cheggs?

Has anyone’s student rented books from Cheggs? What was their experience?

I have. It was really easy and their shipping was pretty quick. And they give plenty of reminder emails to send the book back.

The biggest downside – and why I won’t use them – is their return policy. They are horrible at honoring it! Be sure the books you order are the books you want or you may run into a few snags. If nothing else, it’s still very expensive because they charge a flat fee for shipping which can be comparatively big if you aren’t ordering major textbooks.

Thanks for the information. My son is checking it out–I had never heard of Cheggs before.

This company worked well for us. I ordered based on the ISBN number so there was no error in ordering the correct books.

undecided - the points you made would be something to consider from any book source. If you ordered used books from say, Amazon, you would not even have the option of returning them at all.

That’s not entirely true (some sellers do offer returns), but your point is well made.

Chegg is like any other rental service or individual seller, honestly: be sure you rent what you know you want because there isn’t an avenue for “oops, don’t need this after all” returns like you would have at a brick-and-mortar store or its online equivalent.

Mea culpa, but it was an unpleasant reminder that not all book traders are in the same market.

One more detail about Cheggs - they are not always the cheapest.

What I do is put together a book list for the semester. (The hard part is getting the ISBN numbers.) Then I look at the cost at the school’s bookstore and compare that to Borders Bookstore (they email nice coupons), Amazon used booksellers, Half.com. ebay and Cheggs.

One interesting thing I have learned is that the college bookstore sometimes has the best price! Surprising but true. However, that is often not the case (but this can be true if you need a book rather than a textbook).

Sometimes I can buy the book used cheaper than I can rent it at Cheggs.

There are so many variables. That said, Cheggs is a good option, especially if you need textbooks which are the most expensive of all.
