Back to our wedding discussion.

I think many brides work very hard at achieving a goal weight/fitness level for their weddings. I know my daughter did and she looked gorgeous. This is not unique to a President’s daughter. (Heck- MY daughter’s wedding is what motivated me to get some weight off myself and get back into competitive running!)

“Wow. So much anger for just an opinion. This wedding cost $3M when people are starving.”

In the USA lots of folks are unemployed, over a year, cause of inadequate aggregate demand.

I will get on rich folks for wanting their taxes cut. I will get on rich folks for wanting to cut spending on the poor. I will get on rich folks who dont do philanthropy.

But I will NOT get on rich folks for spending money at a time when unemployment is 9.5% and its likely to take 3 or 4 years for aggregate demand to recover.

It is not like the $3M just blew away. It went to pay for the food, the waiters, the flowers, the florist, the invitations, etc. The money went into the economy – local and otherwise.

I work very part time at a party store. Things have definitely slowed down in the party business. We are grateful when people come to purchase their wedding supplies from us. We imprint napkins for less than can be done online, and usually faster. Weddings help keep us in business, and people employed.

While most of us think that very lavish weddings are a waste of money, remember people are getting paid for that money, and it is helping the economy.

jym, I would have commented earlier on your link to the ugly wedding dresses. But it took me a while to collect my jaw from the floor where it had landed.

My personal favorite was #2. It looked like … um, not bridal. Wow to all of them.

LOL Hayden! Maybe there is an orthopedic surgeon around her somewhere who can fix your jaw. # 4 reminds me of a cross between a Q-tip and some tieback curtains in a house I used to live in…

Given the meandering route this thread has taken, this seems to nicely tie up the themes of weddings, cats and questionable expenditures:

jym, most of those ugly wedding dresses were awful, but I thought #8 was fine, and #9 was quite beautiful - only the headdress was awful, and maybe the neck - I couldn’t see the detail there.

But the worst dress I’ve seen is the one on Emma Thomson. I can’t fathom how anyone could have thought that one up.

Now for a mood-lightener:

I love this couple! (And I like her dress - not strapless!)

NYmom-
Do you perhaps mean #s 9 and 10 were ok (except for the awful headpieces). # 8 looks like a swiffer dust cleaner.

^^ You’re right, jym, it does look like a duster! Now I’m laughing.

I still think #9 is beautiful. #10 is awful.

I just saw that! I thought it was really neat

mythmom, I agree … I saw an episode of SYTTD, where a bride was upset that her Pnina Tornai (bustier-top) ball gown dress had a thin lining and was no longer sheer. The gown had cost 20K or 30K . The bride cried and refused to wear the dress. Her father acquiesced having Klenfelds special order another Pnina 30K (bustier-see-through top) gown.

One of my pet peeves is a bride in a strapless gown with her hair not in an up do style. Long flowing hair and a strapless gown looks silly to me. But I guess I am in the minority because a lot of brides no longer put their hair up. Chelseas hair looked perfect . future brides take note!!

Oh, I think long flowing hair and a strapless gown can be beautiful!

Back to the wedding cost (apologies Jym). I don’t have a strong opinion about the Clinton’s spending even what is wildly purported to be the highest amounts. I am surprised, however, that there is not more flak about it. Michelle Obama is getting labeled as a Marie Antoinette for her Spain vacation all over the place. I haven’t heard or read much about the Clinton’s extravagences including their recent new home purchase.

Jumping around here, I don’t think upswept hairdos are necessary with strapless gowns and can even give someone a top heavy look. My friend’s daughter had her hair swept up in a beautiful do that didn’t look right with the strapless gown. She has large shoulders and a largish head and big hair. The upswept do just was too much. She had to have neckline or bosom line of the dress hiked up a bit, add a necklace and bring down the hair at the last minute. She looked out of balance otherwise.

I know that an upswept hair do for me has to work with the rest of my clothes. I tried it with my veil and wedding dress, and it was pretty clear that having some waves around my ears and shoulders made it much, much prettier. The pulled back do was just a bit too severe for me.

What home did the Clintons buy recently? I know about the Georgetown mansion and the Chappaqua house, but they’ve had those homes for years.

I much prefer seeing hair down.

No apologies necessary, cptofthehouse. I was just trying to throw a little levity in to reduce the tension a bit. Personally, I think the wedding was tastefully done.

Are the Clintons moving to the new house in Bedford Hills?

I think a bride (or any woman for that matters) looks good in a pulled back hairstyle if she has: a long neck, small ears, and a classically pretty face. Many women are lacking one or another of those qualities and, often, a pulled back hairstyle just doesn’t work. IMO the key to looking good at your wedding is to do what works for you and is the most flattering. I think that there are certain styles/trends at any given time and brides go for what everyone else is doing. I mentioned before–most of the bridal gowns now (at least that was my experience when I shopped with my D) are strapless. There aren’t a lot of non-strapless styles available. As a result, I think lots of women end up with strapless gowns simply because that’s mostly what they saw and what their friends are wearing. I think it’s the same with hairstyles. Lots of brides are wearing their hair up/pulled back, etc. It doesn’t look good on everyone, but because it’s a trend lots of brides end up doing it.
