Chem 351 vs. MCDB 310 (Intro biochem)

What’s the major difference between these two courses? If I take MCDB 310, would it put me at a disadvantage for subsequent Biochem courses (Chem 451 and Chem 452). Is the professor a dick like rumor puts around the University?

Chem 351 is required for biochem majors. Chem 351 has a slight emphasis on the chemistry side of biochemistry. MCDB 310 has a slight emphasis on the bio side of biochemistry. You would think this to create the implication of 351 testing critical thinking and 310 testing memorization; however, 351 manages to test both more in-depth as 351 is just a harder class. Some of my friends from 351 (we took it with Nolta) took 452 before I did. We also studied with some people who were taking 451 while we were taking 351. We came to the unanimous conclusion that 351 was a harder class.

However, the biochem curriculum was recently redesigned. Chem 451/452 are now (as of this coming fall semester) specifically designed to build off of the material covered in Chem 351; therefore, I would be inclined to say that it would put you at a disadvantage for Chem 451/452 to take 310 instead of 351. If you’re smart, I’d say it wouldn’t put you at a big disadvantage.

Yes, my friends from 310 would be more than happy to confirm the rumor that you mentioned.
