My daughter’s honors chem teacher just today announced that he would be giving a test this coming Friday morning, the same day of her AP Euro test. It seems most of the teachers don’t expect students in their class that day. The Euro teacher told them he can’t tell them to skip school but he understands if they do - that’s it is important to have a good night’s sleep. According to my daughter, he subtley encouraged them to stay home.

The chemistry is difficult right now and they are still learning what will be on the test. My daughter feels that she doesn’t have the time to study for comprehension and will likely do poorly. She already has a test grade she is not happy with for this quarter.

Do I let her stay home? Apparently other kids have their parent’s permission to do that. I’m encouraging her to go and try to study an hour a night for the next couple nights as a “break” from AP.

I really empathize with her and think it is pretty lousy of the teacher to schedule a test. He told the kids they need to stay on track to cover the material they’ll need to know for the
Regents (NY State test) in June.

In our school when a teaqcher did that and did not budge when informed, we could enlist GC and Asst principal. There were not supposed to be other tests scheduled on same days as APs. Schools are pretty sensitive to how well their students do on the APs. Are there other avenues? Is she the only one with the combination?

At our school the policy is that students who have an afternoon AP exam do not come in until exam time. Morning exam students are permitted to leave when their exam is over.

Why can’t she just do both tests? Other students will be taking the chem test so why shouldn’t your D? I don’t think it’s fair to the other students when one skips a test day just to get more time to study or ‘more sleep’ and I don’t think parents should enable this. There’ll likely be times in her college career when she’ll have a couple of midterms or finals in the same day so she needs to learn how to handle it. I don’t understand what the problem is with her just taking both tests.

There are at least ten other kids in the Chem class who are taking AP Euro. I suggested going to the principal to my daughter and she said the other kids wouldn’t want to do that. It’s easier to stay home from school is their attitude.

I don’t want her to skip the test. She is totally stressed about the AP. According to her, only two kids plan on taking both tests. They are chem whizzes and don’t need to study.

I agree - I don’t think it’s fair either. She knows several kids who use this strategy - skip school and take the test later. They even have the gall to ask her what was on the test. Fortunatley, she stands her ground and doesn’t tell them.

On the other hand, you would think the teacher would want the kids to understand the material and give them the best opportunity to succeed.
