Chemical Engineering or Chemistry?

I’ve been wondering whether I should transfer to UCSB for chemistry using the TAG or just apply for chemical engineering as a regular student. I’m currently at a freshman at a community college and don’t know what path I should go to? I know engineering is an impacted major so I don’t want to get my hopes up for it if I can just major in chemistry and use the TAG or take my chances and apply for Chemical Engineering?

the employment prospects and type of work done by ChemE’s is very different than those of Chem majors. Yet you seem to treat them as pretty much the same. Maybe knowing more about each would help influence your decision?

You should take classes that will give you an idea of what either major is like. Internships in either field are good as well. Bottom line, you should major in what you want to. It’s okay if you don’t know right now - it’s only your first semester.

Are you considering medical school? Or are you just particularly interested in Chemistry?

This is a rather big question in general - you shouldn’t limit your options to UCSB solely, just because you can TAG there. You will want to apply elsewhere, with having the guarantee of being accepted at UCSB.

From the little research I’ve done, I found that there are less jobs available for chemistry majors, than chemical engineering majors for undergraduates. It seems that chemistry is a job choice if you enjoy bench work or what to pursue a job in research or academia. Chemical engineering focuses on other things such as production or efficiency. I hope this gives you some idea of the difference.
