I am a high school senior looking for a chemical engineering college that has a good job placement rate, Army or Navy ROTC, and a notable chemical engineering program.
ACT Composite: 31
GPA ~ 3.9-4.0 unweighted
I would appreciate suggestions of smaller schools (10,000 students maximum) with varying degrees of acceptance rates and difficulties. Although I want a top level program, I would like some colleges that I can fall back on if my top choices fall through.
Finances do not concern me.
South Dakota School of Mines & Technology has been designated a “military friendly” college by military/veterans organizations. That means they provide ample support services to military folks seeking an education. Mines is a rigorous STEM university that provides great employment opportunities to its students.
Also investigate;
U of Rochester (ROTC across town at R.I.T.)
Illinois Institute of Technology (across town at UI-Chicago)
Clarkson University
Worcester Polytechnic Institute
Mississippi State University
U of Idaho
Ohio University
U of Cincinnati
U of Akron
U of Dayton
Not ROTC, but with the same career goal of officer in the US Army… the United States Military Academy has chemical engineering.
Also look at UDel and UMD, both of which have ROTC. I’m actually looking to do ChemE and ROTC also, but AFROTC.
Admission to the U of Delaware for a non-resident is going to be tough because it has one of the top ChE departments in the world thanks to the DuPont company. Of course, if the applicant is a full-pay student, well that helps. Note that UD and UMD both have over twice the number of students that the OP says he is looking for in a campus.
Are you looking for ROTC programs to help you pay for college?
Something to keep in mind when you’re planning your career: Army ROTC cadets have the option of commissioning into the Army Reserve or National Guard. That way, you can have the military pay for your school and you can still have a lucrative civilian career when you graduate. Chemical engineers make way more than Army lieutenants. Your grades and scores are certainly good enough to receive an ROTC scholarship AND get into a good school.
I’m an ROTC graduate and an engineer (civil) let me know if you want advice.
Clemson University- Army and Air Force ROTC
Tufts is on the smaller side with 5000 undergrads. The current CEO of DuPont is an alum. ROTC is offered through MIT (which is another option).
