An uncle of a friend of mine used to be a chemical engineer…that is until he almost got himself blown up at a power plant and then went back to school to study something else…

Was this a very rare scenario or are the lives of chemical engineers generally at risk?

I guess you could say that there’s some risk involved. After all, these are chemicals you’re dealing with.

On the other hand, there are risks involved in other fields too. For example, I wouldn’t call petroleum engineering (i.e. going onto offshore oil platforms around the world and drilling for oil) the safest job in the world. I wouldn’t say that hanging out in factories, as a lot of mechanical engineers do, is all that safe. I don’t know that being a doctor and hence being exposed to lots of myriad contagious diseases is particularly safe.
