My cousin is considering a new job in the Cherry Hill NJ area? Any advice, especially about housing, neighborhoods etc? H and his wife are empty nesters, and will be looking for a Jewish community. They are not overly observant but do keep kosher.

I think soozievt would be very helpful about Cherry Hill area.

Yes, I grew up there, but have not lived there since I was 18. However, my parents still lived in Cherry Hill until they passed away in recent years.

There has been a lot more development since I lived there. There is a large Jewish Community Center with a lot going on. My synagogue where I got married has since moved to a new place in Cherry Hill…Temple Beth El. There are a lot of newer neighborhoods since I lived there and they also are in Marlton and Voorhees now, right next to Cherry Hill.

Hi Soozie-- So should I tell my cousins to check out housing/neighborhoods in Marlton and Voorhees when they go to check things out? the job isn’t a done deal at this point, but he wants to check out the area, see if they like it and if it is affordable etc.

It’s close to Princeton which is where my DD is now a freshman and I consider it the center of the universe! Great restaurants, shopping, theater, music.

Cherry Hill isn’t really that close to Princeton and it would be a very annoying commute. It’s got to be ~45-50 miles from Princeton. Although, like Susan, I moved away when I left for college, I spent much of my youth in Cherry Hill and still have friends in the area. Nice places to live in Haddonfield, Moorestown, and Medford as well as Marlton. It wouldn’t be difficult to explore each of those with an experienced realtor. There are several very nice lake communities in Medford that I’m partial to, but it will depend what type of budget they have. There were also some very nice areas in Cherry Hill itself.

My sister lives in Cherry Hill with her husband and three kids, ages 8 - 15. They are Jewish and belong to Temple Beth El, which is conservative (very). One or more of the kids went to the reform temple for nursery school though but I cannot remember the name. I was amazed at how large a town Cherry Hill is. They have two huge public high schools, one is rumored to be more academic than the other. There are some neighborhoods that are affordable with houses that were built mostly in the late '50’s and early 60’s and there are other brand new neighborhoods with expensive and snazzy looking homes with pools etc. The Cherry Hill Mall has all the major chains and there are many strip malls with good restaurants and shopping. It takes my sister about 25-30 minutes to drive to the airport and about the same amount of time to drive to center city Philadelphia. It really is a wonderful suburb to raise children in. Many people summer at the Jersey Shore, which is just under an hour away. Atlantic City is about the same distance.

I just realized that the couple were empty nesters. CH has all age groups but it does seem to cater to families.

East has the renowned academic reputation. M’kor Shalom is a reform temple - formerly of ex-Rabbi Neulander fame. It’s moved on and is a vibrant and strong congregation today. Lots and lots of empty nesters remain in the area well after their kids are grown.

Agree that it is not near Princeton.

There are so many new neighborhoods that it would be hard for me to suggest any as I am not current, even though I go there every year. But yes, they should look beyond Cherry Hill proper and include Marlton, Voorhees, Haddonfield, and also Medford (Medford is further from Philly, but is closer to the shore and also has many lakes…my brother and his family live there). But the synagogues and Jewish Community Center in Cherry Hill would likely still be where they would connect.

I went to Cherry Hill HS East.

wow, thanks for all this good info. I sent my cousins a link to this thread.

I wouldn’t consider Cherry Hill close to Princeton at all.

2 really good towns in the area are Haddonfield and Moorestown
