Great ideas for female auditioning for “Chess”?

Thanks!

By chance, is your daughter attending JU? Because that is where I will be attending and I believe we are doing Chess in the fall.

Yes she is. Have you heard any information about auditions?

I have not heard anything. I can’t even find an updated fine arts calendar for the upcoming school year.
Actually, I haven’t heard much from JU in general. I’m trying to get information about orientation and it’s not clear as to what exactly is going on.

What is JU? Does that stand for Jacksonville University? I did a search as I have not heard of that school and maybe you could share about the program there? DisneyDirector, I thought your daughter went to Millikin?

Soozievt,
It does stand for Jacksonville University and it is a small private school located on the St. John’s River. They offer a BFA in Music Theatre and also BA and BFA in Theatre Arts, along with various other degrees. The school has been around for awhile, but is starting to gain notoriety in Florida for their music programs (along with their top-notch Aviation program). Being from Florida, I did not hear about the program until last October, when I was a freshman at an institution in South Carolina. I was looking to transfer to a small school with a good Musical Theatre program. I stumbled across JU and have heard nothing but praise for the program. I was actually in contact with someone who attended JU for a year but transferred because she wanted to be closer to home. She spoke very highly of Dr. Robert Tudor (the department chair) and said that he has drastically turned around the program in the few years he has been there. I saw a show in March at JU and was impressed with the talent at JU. I am very excited to start at JU in the fall! :)

Thank you for sharing about a program that has not been mentioned here before. It is always good to know of the options that are out there. I had done a quick look of their site earlier and saw the BFA in Theater but not one for Musical Theater but I guess I missed it. Best of luck to you in your new college and let us know how it goes.

Soozievt:

My daughter was at Millikin but is now transferring to JU as part of their BFA Music Theatre program. The program falls under the auspices of the Music Dept. The theatre Dept. does has a BFA in Theatre. Thus far, we’ve been very impressed with the program especially with the focus on theory and instrumentation as well as Musical Theatre and, of course, Dr. Tudor.

I will certainly post more here as she becomes involved in the school and the department and let everyone know about the program and what to expect.

Thank you for explaining. I recall your D starting at Millikin this year and so I got confused. I also had not heard of JU and when I looked it up, I only looked under the theater department and not the music department and so that explains it. Good luck to your daughter on her new adventure and surely share about this program as it helps readers to learn of more programs out there as there are a finite number of them for this field.

Absolutely. And, famous…, I am sure that information will pick up this month from JU as to what is happening for August. Hang in!

Thought I would give a quick update on Jacksonville University. My daughter loves it there. The program is small and the faculty are inviting and talented. She has been impressed across the board with her instructors. It is a well-rounded program. She took theory, acting, jazz, musical theatre workshop, chorus, private voice, diction. She also has to take some academics - it was math this go round which she Aced!

I can say that this is the place for her. I have a very changed daughter from last year at this time. Sometimes it takes a while to find your place and you shouldn’t give up if you don’t find it the first time around.

AND - she was cast as Florence in Chess!

Good year so far…

DisneyDirector… SOOOOO Happy your D has found her “home”!!! AND congrats to her being cast as Florence in Chess :).

Enjoy winter break with D!

Kat

Kat - thanks for your good wishes. You were very supportive when I was trying to help her through her struggles. It was and is much appreciated.

I actually just recommended your program to a talented young lady who is graduating from my daughter’s high school this year.

Thanks again!

Thanks! Hope you enjoy some time at home with D over her winter break! Kat

That’s the plan! Hope your break is a great one! Happy Holidays!

Sorry to intrude but, what happened at Millikin that caused your daughter to transfer? Did they not change their program? I am very confused, I thought you said that Millikin was the school for your daughter and you had some strong opinions about other peoples posts. Please share, I do not want to make any mistakes here, and no I am not under the impression that my child will stay at one school, I am just hoping that she will.
