I’ve heard positive feedbacks on this book. It’s organized well and gives readers a good foundation in chess. As a fledgling chess player, I need a book like that. I started playing chess almost two weeks ago. So far, I’ve had a few games over the internet. Everything is still new to me, and, as anyone can guess, I’m not that good. Hopefully, a good book covering the basics will solve that. I don’t know if anyone at CC plays chess and have heard or used Chess for Juniors. I’m sure they may be a few of you. If so, what’s your opinions on that book or anyother books that may be helpful? If I’m going to invest nearly 15 dollars on a book solely from interest, I want to know if it’s good.

Why don’t you try a few chess books from your local library? You can then find out which ones you like, and buy your own personal copy.

Yasser Seirawan’s (former US Champion and a great chess writer) series of books is excellent. “Play Winning Chess” (the first in the series), “Winning Chess Tactics”, etc.

Here are Seirawan books beginning at $1 plus shipping (used book site):

No doubt you can search for Chess for Juniors, too, at this site.

I used to play chess competitively, and I highly recommend buying Chessmaster 10th Edition. It’s one of the best computer programs for chess, and it will definitely improve your game dramatically.

I assume you already have USCF membership, but if you don’t, become a member. Every month, you will receive a copy of Chess Life, which includes many games you can analyze and many puzzles you can trying working on. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies.

For a beginner like me, what is better to improve my chess playing: playing a lot or reading books?
