I just saw Sarah Jessica Parker, all dressed up and made up, at the Oscars, chewing gum. I find this so inappropriate and yet it is something many people on tv and in real life do. Admittedly this might just be my problem as I hate seeing people mindlessly chewing gum and it is the one thing my kids know I will never buy them. Does anyone else feel this way?

I HATE this habit, too! Mooooo! It is like brushing one’s teeth in public.

Morgan Freeman was also chomping away during the red-carpet interview I saw.

Maybe they’re trying to kick the habit by chewing nicotine gum.

I noticed that too and thought, “really? gum chewing at the Oscars?”

Really dislike it in business meetings, too. When did this start?

Morgan Freeman looks like he is having a hard time staying awake now- maybe he should get some of that nicotine gum.

My pet peeve by far. I was at the eye doctor’s last fall and the new partner was CHEWING GUM while she examined me. This is a doctor of optometry, not some lab kid. It was subtle, no popping bubbles but not too hard to discern. EEEEEeeeeeewwwwwww. Professional people who are getting close to someone else’s face should NOT be chewing gum.
I guess I should tell the senior partner (whom I have seen for years) why I will decline appointments with the new partner.

am wondering if they’re chewing gum to cover up the alcohol smell (or whatever!).

sarah jessica parker looked pretty silly chewing gum…wonder if she knew how it blew her whole look

How about Sam Worthington? On stage, hands in pockets, chewing gum. It came across as arrogant or classless for some reason. Like he is just too cool for this scene.

I noticed these people chewing gum as well. I am not into gum chewing generally speaking as it is, but it seems really odd to me that these folks would do so at a formal event in formal attire while being shot close up on TV.

As far as it ruining Sarah Jessica Parker’s look…frankly, I did not like her look tonight, even though I like her as an actress. Her dress was one of the worst ones there. Her hairdo was so sixties and ugh. And she looked like she stayed too long in a tanning bed. So, nothing would have saved her look tonight. And this was on a night when I thought there were a lot of very nice dresses. Just not hers (or Jennfier Lopez’s).

In case you missed her: [2010 Red Carpet: Sarah Jessica Parker’s dress](http://oscars.movies.yahoo.com/photos/112-2010-red-carpet-arrivals#OmgPhoid=6)

Scary. Looks like preproduction for some alien horror movie.

^^ DH’s verdict: “Sequined garbage bag.” LOL.

I didn’t see the entrance- so missed the chewing gum- but as a former stylist in a " entertainment" salon from the early 80’s, I would think gum is used by people to calm their nerves, hide tobacco mouth or too much coke.

Not only chewing gum, but some chewing gum with their mouths open…

I once quit a job because of a coworker’s noisy gum. Whistling is annoying too. I fail to understand why people will knowingly make a noise that can be heard far away.

Didn’t watch the Oscars because I don’t care about celebrities and can hear the winners the next morning, but I didn’t realize there were so many gum haters out there! I chew gum for a couple of reasons - when I am out to lunch and can’t brush my teeth afterward, or if I am craving a snack and trying not to eat. It would not have bothered me to see people at the Oscars chewing gum.

I had a teacher in middle school that made it her life goal to ingrain in us that gum is inappropriate in formal or professional settings.
