Chicago hotel recs

Going in may, looking for good location for walking, into museums, and of course a cubs game which we just got our tickets

Thanks!!,

What is your budget?

I’ve stayed downtown twice, and another time I stayed in a suburb (Glenview, I think?-- it was nice) and took the metra into town via union station… both options are great, the latter is a fantastic idea if you’re on a budget. When we stayed in the suburbs we had a couple minute walk to the train station, could leave our car at the hotel and didn’t have to pay for parking, and within ten or so minutes we were downtown.

As for downtown… We stayed at the Hyatt in December… I think it was on Wacker Drive? We had a massive corner suite with a river view for $60 a night thanks to priceline. I walk from there to the museum campus (etc) when I go to Chicago, but this last time we got a three day bus pass from CVS and took the buses everywhere, which I highly recommend and it opens up your options a bit in terms of distance from the attractions you want to visit. There’s a great app where you can put in where you want to go, and it’ll show you the bus line you need, the nearest stop, and all the up-to-date arrival times-- I will never go to Chicago without it again.

I’ve also stayed at the congress near grant park, which was a GREAT location for walking to the musuems and it was a really cool hotel… but it’s an older building and it’s not cheap due to the location, so it depends on your tastes.

There are TONS of options with varying prices, this is just what I’ve done myself.

My DH spent weeks (literally) at the Palmer House. Its a Hilton property but a cool, grand hotel downtown right by the art museum/school with lots of history. I went for a weekend. Really enjoyed it.

Just the couple? No kids?

If there is no budget, the Waldorf Astoria.

The Kimpton–Palomar

For the budget minded-- [Chicago hotel | Best Western Plus Hawthorne Terrace Hotel | Chicago, IL](<a href=“Hotels in Chicago, IL Lakeview – Best Western Plus Hawthorne”>Hotels in Chicago, IL Lakeview – Best Western Plus Hawthorne)

Nice simple hotel in a fun area and within walking distance of Wrigley. Not very glamorous, but a fine place to stay.

If you’re flying in and out and want to stay at an airport hotel at all (arriving really late or leaving really early), the airport Hyatt is really nice. I haven’t stayed there in years, but I peeked at their website and it looks like they’ve just renovated everything. I didn’t peek at their room rates though. Might be steep.

The old Ambassador East has been redone and is now an Ian Schrager hotel - The Public, Chicago. I stayed there in January and it was great. Walked in at midnight and both the Pump Room and the Library were jumping, but it was quiet up on my room floor.

I like that it is in the middle of a residential neighborhood (Gold Coast). One block north of Division. The subway is about 3 block away. Hotel is on NE corner of State and Goethe.

We enjoyed our stay here:

A bit frayed here and there, but felt safe and location was perfect. Walk to Art museum & most of downtown attractions. The El is right outside the hotel (which can be a bit noisy depending on your room). Without knowing it we rode the train on the night of game, what a crowd!

Have fun…

Embassy Suites, 511 North Columbus Drive, close to Art Institute, Michigan Ave, Navy Pier, big rooms, custom made breakfasts included.

JusT two adults and we want to walk as mich as we can a…budget, well we do have one!!!

The Hawthorne Terrace fills up with Cubbie fans when there is a game on, so you might want to book early. I really can’t imagine a better place to stay if you are going to a game. Also lots of independent inexpensive restaurants nearby. Have a great trip.

We stayed at the Blackstone a couple of summers ago. Son’s best friend stayed there last summer. Beautiful historic hotel. Our room faced Lake Michigan, overlooking Grant Park and the Buckingham Fountain. Could have walked to Field Museum, Shedds Aquarium and Planetarium. Walked to a great breakfast/lunch place called Yolks, I believe, on Michigan Avenue, on the way to the museums. We had access to the concierge lounge and enjoyed great breakfast there and snacks during the day. Hotel staff couldn’t have been nicer and more helpful. Didn’t have a car, but easy, inexpensive cab rides when didn’t want to walk. We loved Chicago. Have a great trip, and GO CUBBIES!

I just made reservations at the Hyatt Regency on Wacker- $125. I couldn’t get the rate that Emaheevul07 found. Price is good but parking is $52; so we are parking at my dd’s place and having her drive us to the hotel. let us know what you find.

I live in a Chicago suburb yet spend a fair amount of time in hotels in Chicago for business and pleasure. Top of the line I have stayed at was the Ritz Carlton which is on North Michigan Avenue. Great location and all the amenities you would expect but pricy. In the same general area but much less money was the Wyndham but also very nice. We recently stayed at the Fairmont which is south of the river and east of Michigan Avenue. Great restaurant and bar and very walkable to museums. (if you stay there, don’t miss breakfast at Wildberry, about a block away.) We paid $149 per might at the Fairmont with a special deal. We have also have done the Palmer House which is very elegant but rooms are very small (similar to the Drake). We like the Embassy Suites on State Street for the affordability and location but one of my favorites is Hotel Palomar. I love everything about the Kimpton brand hotels; from their service to their restaurants.

If you have time, don’t miss the architectural boat tour (weather permitting). Also, the food tours are unbelievable.

So many great ideas for future Chicago trips where my son now lives.

First trip-stayed at Kimpton Palomar, loved it, and that special opening rate of $100 night. Not sure it’s location is best for museums, and walking.

Better location-
Second Visit, stayed at Ambassador East- super location, another great pre-renovation rate, of $100 night. The location is superb for strolling the nearby Astor streets, which are beautifully landscaped, nice walk to Lincoln Park. Ambassador East, now PublicHotel. Famous celebrity photos decorate the wall.

Third Visit- two weeks ago- The WhiteHall Hotel (another great rate). Walked 1 mile to Chicago history museum, but took cab to The Art Institute about 2 miles away. Highly recommend-I asked for quiet room because yelpers mentioned noise level. It’s across from Four Seasons, which connects to 900 Mall, collection of stores anchored with Bloomingdales.

Do report back where you go!

(thanks to everyone who posts, very helpful)

Highly recommend the Lincoln Park, Old Town Food Tour.

But, a real discovery and HIGHLY recommend Detour Chicago tour. Son LOVED THIS, too!!
(disclaimer the owner, Amanda, was our guide, a former Italy tourguide with Rick Steves Company-so she was truly excellent)
