Chicago Hotels for a 50-year old

Kind of like the 20-year old Chicago hotel thread but without the youth hostel vibe. My idea of roughing it is staying at the Motel 6. Anyone have a hotel you can recommend in the North Shore area/around Wrigley Field?

How about staying in Evanston in the Orrington Hotel…there is another
hotel in downtown Evanston (?) Holiday Inn or Marriott.

Near Wrigley Field? None come to mind. How near?

Nothing much near Wrigley. Stay near north Michigan Ave and take the L. You can get good deals on Hotwire.

I second hotwire. I just got back from a business trip to Chicago where our meeting was at the Fairmont. Group rate was $300 a night. Several of the attendees got nearby rooms at GREAT hotels for $100 a night (like Hard Rock Hotel). I have never seen so many hotels in my life (outside of Las Vegas). Chicago has really grown since my law school days. I’ve been back a bunch on business, but the growth sort of crept up on me.

Best Western Hawthorne Terrace—VERY close to Wrigley. Lots of Cubbie fans there the last time we stayed. Reasonable, close to plenty of great inexpensive restaurants. We have had two great stays there and wouldnt stay anywhere else. If I remember correctly Wrigley is in walking distance. I just checked the Best Western web site and it runs about $175. Call them directly for a better rate.

I just returned a couple days ago from a great stay at the Hyatt Regency on Wacker. I got it on Priceline for $59/night (parked at the E. Monroe lot for $20/24 hours). It was very nice, clean, with a comfortable bed. My daughter & I went to concerts in the Lakeview area, one el stop before Wrigley. We returned on the el game night, because it was only 11 or so & there were lots of people returning from the game. They next night, though, we didn’t return until after 1 so took a cab.

I have also stayed at the Ambassador East, in the Gold Coast area. It’s a very nice hotel, and you can get it for a good price on Hotwire (see betterbidding.com for tips on how to figure out which Hotwire or Priceline hotel is which). It is closer to Wrigley if you plan to take a cab.

I have heard that Hawthorne Terrace is nice, and I have also heard that the Days Inn by Wrigley isn’t too bad. The problem is … if it’s a game night, they’ll probably be sold out.

There are also some good bed & breakfast options in the area. Check out the Chicago b&b website … they have them listed by neighborhood. Lakeview, Wrigleyville, and Lincoln Park should all work for you.

The Sofitel is great. It is located close to the JH building.

Good ideas. Thanx everyone.
