Chicago vs. Hopkins?

Which would you pick for a kind of laid-back student, interested in possibly biology grad school or med school? Don’t want anything too cut throat.

i’ve visited both but after the chicago tour, i talked to a few students and they say that sometimes it really is too competitive… even with extracurriculars and such (eg scav hunt).

however, you really can’t base too much off of that.

Hopkins has a reputation for being cut throat, AFAIK. Any top school can get competitive, but I’d say Chicago is less cut throat than Hopkins.

Laid back in what sense? Chicago students take their studies very, very seriously. There is nothing passive about them. But they are laid back in the sense that they aren’t trying to prove something to someone.

if you don’t want anything too cutthroat, and you’re a premed at hopkins/chicago, you’re looking at the wrong places

Hopkins is not NEARLY as competitive as it was in the 80’s. The students that I know are strong academically but in no way, shape or form are they ‘cuthroat’. That’s a reputation that has long been passed down most undeservingly. I would disregard that unless you have been on campus and spoken to students.

IMO, I think Hopkins offers more opportunities to take classes outside of your major with no core curriculum, no grades first semester (woo!!) and an east coast location with access to everything from NYC down to DC because it’s on the train line Baltimore.

The weather at Hopkins absolutely beats the cold Chicago winters…
