Chick Flicks

Many of my favorite “chick flick” movies happen to be movies my husband also enjoys:

Mean Girls, The Devil Wears Prada, What A Girl Wants, Princess Diaries, Parent Trap, Clueless, Legally Blonde, Never Been Kissed. etc.

Here are some of my other favorites which I just prefer to watch on my own – so I guess these are “my” chick flick favorites:

Ever After
Love Actually
Riding in Cars With Boys
Marie Antoinette
City of Angels
The Illusionist
Edward Scissorshands

I wouldn’t spend money on book or movie of Eat, P, L. Disliked Sex movies. Will join a group of 12 to see julia and Tom in Bad Teacher this weekend, but doubt I’ll like it. The notion of a bad teacher is not my idea of fun.

So, Which Pride & prejudice? (with Keira? the British TV version?) Which Sense & Sensibility? (with Emma Thomas?) Why haven’t they redone North…Abbey? Prefer Emma movie version (with Gwnneth Paltrow) to BBC series (that Emma looked at least 35 or older). It seems there are many true fans on CC…

I vote for the A&E version of Pride & Prejudice! Although I did like the music in the Keira version. I loved that The King’s Speech had Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy reunited.

My second favorite is Bride and Prejudice. What could be better than Bollywood+Jane Austen?

Branching out a little into TV (cause you’ve already mentioned all my best Chick Flick movies) with the entire series of The Gilmore Girls. My husband could not understand how I, and both at-the-time teenaged boys could watch it.

**I love the A&E version of P&P!

The Wedding Singer.

I absolutely LOVE While You Were Sleeping.

^^^ Ditto

Well, college_query, I also just dittoed what you said about Lars and the Real Girl over on the tearjerker thread - same taste in movies, I guess.

Let’s slide a mention of Lars and the Real Girl into this thread also. ;)

Not sure if these qualify as chick flicks, but I’m the only one around here who likes these movies:

Sabrina (original and remake)
Roman Holiday (are we seeing an Audrey Hepburn pattern here?!)
Chocolat
The American President

And I hate to admit it, but I like Hugh Grant movies. I know he’s a first rate jerk, but there is something about his movies that I like. Can’t explain it, but there it is.

ignatius, if we have the same taste, have you discovered Doc Martin yet? H discovered it on Netflix. It’s a British TV comedy and it’s absolutely hilarious, although I don’t think it qualifies in the chick flick category.

Gone With the Wind

My entire family loves P & P with Colin Firth. Well, my husband likes the movie but is so so about Colin.

Flashdance

I’m going to use this thread to fix up my Netflix queue.

Both Scarlet Pimpernels, the old black & white with Leslie Howard and the newer made-for-TV with Anthony Andrews.

Joy Luck Club
Serendipity
Waiting to Exhale
The Bodyguard
Beaches
Fried Green Tomatoes
How to Make An American Quilt

Agree wholeheartedly about Lars and the Real Girl being wonderful!

Becoming Jane
Atonement

Nope - haven’t heard of the series. Thanks.

If chick flick includes romance, here are my additions:
English Patient
Bright Star
East West
Jane Eyre (the new one and the old one)

After reading through this thread I’m confirming that I’m not a “chick flicks” person. But the followign would be movies that I would be enjoy watching because of the actors: English patient, Bridget Jone’s diary, My best friend’s wedding, and Walk the line.

There’s a subtle difference between chick flicks and “date movies” that we’re not acknowledging here. The latter usually involve compromises to make them more palatable to 18-32 year-old boys – like telling the story from the point-of-view of a male protagonist, especially if he does really manly things (like shooting people or sports), limiting the number of female characters (see below), having the women get naked . . .

It is shocking how many of the chick flicks nominated here would fail (or barely pass) the famous Bechdel Test (created by graphic artist Alison Bechdel):

– Does a movie have two or more female characters whose names are clear?
– Do those women talk to one another?
– About something other than men?

While plenty of movies that appeal to women flunk the test, it’s equally upsetting that a movie that passes it is overwhelmingly likely to appeal primarily to women. And if you flipped the genders around . . . maybe 98% of movies would pass (but the ones that didn’t would definitely be chick flicks).

My wife, who generally dislikes films with subtitles, but generally likes chick flicks, really loved a Lebanese film called Caramel, about the lives and loves of a bunch of women working in a beauty salon in Beirut.

I have a couple Chick Flicks that pass the Bechdel test
Volver
Like Water for Chocolate
Grey Gardens ( both a film w Drew Barrymore & Jessica Lange and a documentary w same name)
