Chico!

I was wondering whether or not (Csu-Chico) would accept me and whether I’m a resident of California or not.
I was born in California and lived there 10 years straight, I moved due to my mom going to Iraq and my freshman year I came back. After my freshman year my mom had a job in the air force so we resided in Texas. However since my mom still has a house in California, she pays property tax and income tax as she has that house rented.
My Gpa between sophomore year and junior is 2.85 . The thing is that I got an F on algebra 1, well because I already had passed algebra 2 and trigonometry with C’s so I slacked and I got a “c” on P.e because I had taken P.E before but they stuck me there due to having “no space” in any other class. I plan retaking algebra but I contacted Csu and they said they don’t calculate any senior grades. Anyways would you think Chico would take me? and am I considered a resident or not?
P.s, if it helps, both my parents attain a California drivers license.

Extra curricular: soccer team, swim team. chess club.
Tutored non English speaking kids and taught them English.
I traveled all around the world due to my mom job
I speak Arabic, German, and English.

One of the requirements for CSU is this:

“The CSU requires a minimum 15-unit pattern of courses for admission as a first-time freshman. Each unit is equal to a year of study in a subject area. A grade of C or better is required for each course you use to meet any subject requirement.” ([CSUMentor - Plan for College - High School Students - High School Subject Requirements](<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Freshman: Admission Requirements | CSU))

It says you need three years of: “Math (4 years recommended) including Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, or higher mathematics (take one each year).” And you only passed two out of three years of the higher math (Algebra II and Trig). Since they don’t calculate senior year grades like you said, I don’t know if they would accept you because I don’t think you meet the math requirement. :(

It says this on missing subject requirements:

"How to Make Up Missing Courses

If you didn’t take all the required high school courses or earned D grades in some of them, you have several options to make up these courses and qualify for CSU admission. You can complete appropriate high school courses with a grade of C or better either in summer school or in adult school. Courses in this category must be those found on the high school or adult school UC “a-g” course lists. Some adult schools may not have a-g course lists.

You may also complete college courses with a grade of C or better in the missing subject areas. Finally, you can earn an acceptable score on examinations such as the SAT subject examinations, Advanced Placement examinations, or International Baccalaureate examinations.

If you are unable or do not choose to make up your subject deficiency, you may earn at least 60 units, including 30 semester units of general education from a California Community College or other college and transfer as an upper-division transfer student, where only your college performance is considered for admission."

Your GPA is low. How are your SAT/ACT?

Four things matter to Chico (and all other CSUs but SLO), Required classes, your M+R SAT, your CSU GPA and your residency status. Everything else is noise. The CSU GPA doesn’t include non-college prep courses, like PE and only grades 10 &11.

If you don’t compete the required coursework, you are out - regardless of GPA, SAT, captain of football team or recomendation of your congressman.

They use a very simple formula, CSU GPA*800 + SAT (math and reading only) = CSU Index.

Your residency determines how high the index needs to be. If you are local (live around Chico) the threshold for most programs is around 2900. If you live in CA but not near Chico, the threshold is around 3650-3700. For out of state students, the threshold is higher still (3900-4000 probably).

With a 2.85 you’d need stellar SAT scores (700+ in math and reading) to make it into Chico, even as a CA resident. Their threshold is higher for out of state students.

Here’s a link to help you calculate your CSU GPA.
[CSUMentor - Plan for College - High School Students - GPA Calculator](<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU)

Assuming you can get your residency straightened out, I’d encourage you to apply but suggest you also aply to less selective campuses as well. (Sacramento isn’t too far from there).

Good luck.
