child smokes marijuana

I am not a parent, but I am interested on finding out how you would react/how you did react if/when you found out your child smoked marijuana and/or still smokes marijuana. What if you found out your above average ivy student child smokes marijuana at parties?

Do they inhale?

yea, they “get high”

I would be neither shocked or surprised, however, as a parent I would not be doing my job if I didn’t voice concern over use – any use. I am not so naive to think what went on in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s is not going on today. Plus I went to college and had a life before three children. However, the bottom line for me is intent and intention. So, you can’t shut down the conversation because silence in such matters would translate to consent. Parents walk a fine line… but I do believe that kids will reflect the values in which they were raised, eventually. :)

It would concern me for several reasons. First, it’s illegal, and I think my kids have too much to lose. They have worked very hard to achieve what they have, and I’d hate to see them risk messing up their future, if they were to get in trouble with the law.
I’d also worry about their health. Smoking is harmful, and smoking pot is harmful as well.
If this were my son, I’d really be concerned because it would be so out of character. It would mean that something is very wrong in his life and I had missed it somehow.
My daughter has recently told me that she’s against the legalization of pot because she thinks it would become too easily available and most kids would try it like they do alcohol. She knows a few kids who she thinks have become “dumber” since they started smoking weed, and some who now “have” to smoke to be what they consider normal. Not good.
(She’s 25, btw.)

I’d be far more concerned about the parent who let “ivy” color their response. ;)

yawn…

(The important question is, what [laundry detergent](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/959966-laundry-detergent-advice-college-bound-son.html) does he use?)

Alternatively to us students with baby boomer parents, you could ask how we reacted when we found our parents still have a toke. That would be the more interesting response.

I put the ivy reference in there because I attend cornell currently and have met a lot of recreational users and was just curious as to how parents would react. Ivy and Weed are not two plants you usually mention in the same sentence.

Post of the Day!

LOL Calmom! But hey smoking a little pot is a rite of passage. Remember our last three presidents even admitted to smoking some. All Ivy league too!

Why do you think Ivy would make a difference? My response isn’t going to be any different if it’s flagship state or Ivy.

Anyone who thinks pot isn’t around Ivies in large quantities is dreaming. It was there in the 70’s when I was at Harvard and I’m sure it never left. Last years murder on the campus as the result of a drug deal gone bad is proof of that.

I think someone thinks his generation invented pot.

I thought my generation invented sex at that age too. Relax, there’s nothing new under the sun.

Are you delusional?

D goes to OP’s school and she feels that pot usage there is universal - although I believe they call it weed now.
No surprise at all to me…

I would be concerned and upset about the use of any drug to “get high”.

I’d be more surprised if my child and her friends didn’t try pot/weed.

Now, ask me about cocaine or heroin, and I’d be concerned.

"What if you found out your above average ivy student child smokes marijuana at parties? "

I think you’ll find a lot of parents won’t be too shocked, look at the % of 30-49 yr olds who had smoked it at some point themselves, per this 2002 article:
[Who Smoked Pot? You May Be Surprised](<a href=“Who Smoked Pot? You May Be Surprised”>Who Smoked Pot? You May Be Surprised)

Not shocked, but I hope he would think about the health effects, and I think he would cough like crazy if he inhaled because he has allergies that sometimes go into his chest. BTW, he is an above-average state flagship student child.
