Children’s books for baby shower

I’m invited to the shower of a woman very dear to me. I don’t want to pick something off the registry as I’d like the gift to be more personal. My D and I want to give a starter “library”. My D and I are going to meet at our great independent bookstore this week.

On my list-
Quick as a cricket by Audrey Woods. It is a favorite of all my kids
Brown Bear, Brown bear, What do you see by Bill Martin
Probably a board book by Boynton

What books would you add?

“How are you Peeling? Foods with Moods” It’s a book where the author carves fruit up to depict different feelings. So great! Still one of my favorites!

I love We’re Going on a Bear Hunt for little ones.

Where the wild things are

Goodnight Moon

A book of nursery rhymes with nice illustrations.

Trust me: Voyage to the Bunny Planet.

I received about 5 copies of this. I didn’t like it.

A book set of A Very Hungry Caterpiller by Eric Carle. The set I bought came with the book and a very adorable stuffed caterpillar. I gave it to m great niece. It was very well received.

  1. Love you forever- Robert Munsch
  2. Where's spot?-Eric Hill
  3. Go dog go! -PD Eastman

Quantum Physics for Babies. The Peter Rabbit books. Anything by Eric Carle, Dr. Suess, or Richard Scarry.

I believe this book is out of print, but we have snagged a used hard cover copy in GUC to give as a gift.

The Big Alfie Out of Doors Storybook by Shirley Hughes

Shirley Hughes writes delightful, gentle stories with a big heart. She clearly loves little children. Both of my kids (+ me!) loved this collection of stories.

We have another collection of Alfie stories, but I don’t see the title on Amazon. Looks like the stories have been broken out into single books. Ex: Alfie Gets In First, Alfie Gives a Hand, etc.

Highly recommend.

What a lovely idea, @mom60. Lucky new mom!

There are already lots of good ideas upthread, so I won’t repeat. Huge fans always of The Runaway Bunny, Goodnight Gorilla, 10 Minutes to Bedtime, Ten Nine Eight, Each Peach Pear Plum, The Snowy Day (if that fits with the recipient’s climate, though really even if it doesn’t), and Good Dog Carl. All of those are available in board book versions these days.

I could go on forever. . . .

You can always give something from the registry( which they have indicated they want or need , by registering for it) and throw in a favorite book on top of that.

@Midwest67, all three of mine (and DH and I) loved all the Alfie and Annie Rose books. Shirley Hughes fans forever.

@sevmom already ran my idea by the grandma to be. I also know the Mom to be since she was a baby and I know the library will be well received. This is a baby that is going to get more gifts than any one child needs,
Love all the ideas. I’m going to make a list to take to the store with us.

All of these are books we read to our kids. How about some new classics?

The Knuffle Bunny books, The Pigeon Books ( I would start with Don’t let the Pigeon Stay up Late), or my favorite City Dog, Country Frog all by Mo Willems, You can’t go wrong with Mo Willems, but these are some of his best.

All the World by Liz Garton Scanlon

Ballet Cat or Dance Dance Underpants by Bob Shea

Anything illustrated by Erin Stead, (my Favorite is The Uncorker of Ocean Bottles by Michelle Cuevas)

Fox and Chick, the party by Sergio Ruzzier

There are so many good new books it is hard to say, but if I had to pick one, I would go with Don’t let the Pigeon Stay Up Late – they will read Mo Willems the rest of their childhood.

I have been going through this list and picking one for each visit with grandson:

I Forgot!!! Duck Rabbit, by Amy Krouse Rosenthal. A great book.

And did you know, You can find youtube videos of almost any of these being read aloud if you want to preview them

Our GS loved board books that had texture in the story. One of his early favorites we You are not my Mother. There is a whole series of like books.
