All the talk about China and silverware made me think about how bored I am with my stuff. My BD is around the corner, and Bloomies is having a 50-75% sale this Saturday.
I meant silverware
My everyday china: Wedgewood Strawberry & Vine (from wedding registry), Le Creuset (white, purchased later).
Edited: to remove comments about editing since skieurope took care of it.
I edited and moved to cafe
I already had plenty of dishes but this pattern caught my eye as I was walking through Bloomingdales. I knew right then I had to have it because it matches my house and kitchen perfectly. Over the course of a couple sales I bought 8 place settings and all the extra serving pieces and ramekins. I really love it and use it every day. Mine is the blue color.
For everyday use, I also have Coalport Countryware and a set of plain white from Crate and Barrel.
@GRITS80, I love that blue and white china!
My only “china” is my every day, which I’ve been collecting since I was 17 and had my first studio apartment, Franciscan Desert Rose. It always brings a smile to my face, and I am always thrilled to find the stuff from the 40s - I follow the markings on the bottoms.
Franciscan Desert Rose is beautiful! Once of my best friends has this pattern and inspired me to collect Franciscan Orchard Glade, a pattern that was only produced for a few years. Luckily I was able to amass place settings for eight along with a few serving pieces.
This showed up in my news feed and the first thing I thought of was this thread!
I have an everyday pattern from Mikasa Maxima called “Monet”. The rim looks like Monet’s waterlilies. It’s pretty and very durable. I have given some plates a good whack on the counter (accidentally) and no breakage. But it’s not plastic, it’s china. Sadly discontinued.
I have Franciscan Apple and it’s very cheery too. But I don’t use it everyday.
A few months ago, I replaced EVERYTHING with plain, white porcelain from Crate & Barrel. I was tired of heavy stoneware from when we got married, small sets inherited from various relatives, dated or busy patterns and various seasonal serving pieces. I cleared everything out, ordered 12 place settings, and am so happy with how my cabinet shelves look! Not to mention, now my food is the star of the table
I love our simple porcelain creamy white set from Crate and Barrel, which is what we registered for when we got married. At the time, I couldn’t decide on a pattern, so this is what I picked, which I thought might be boring. Over the years, I’ve discovered I love it more and more for its simplicity. Also, I love the fact that I can use the set with practically any color scheme with different tablecloths/runners/decor etc. I can dress it up or down. It goes with everything and always looks elegant. We’ve been married 24 years, and none of the pieces have broken or chipped. Love it!
I have off white for everyday. Currently, a Macy’s hotel set. The only problem is that the bowls are quite deep and don’t sit well in the dishwasher. I got some Crate and Barrel shallow bowls that work much better. The other problem is that the men in the family still don’t understand that if dishes touch in the dishwasher, chips are likely. Won’t replace until DS moves out for good!
24 years with no chips? I would love to know what porcelain you have from Crate and Barrel. It’s a preferred store of mine, and I’m in the market for new as the nest empties out!
I don’t know if they carry it anymore but on the bottom of the plates, they are stamped Barratts and Made in England.
My H’s “aunt” (not actually blood-related) gave us an entire set of Villary & Bosch “Petits Fleurs.” I liked it at the time, but I never wanted all of it and was convinced it would be rude to return it. Oh, I was so young!
To be honest, I count the days until enough plates are chipped and broken that I can reasonably replace it with something else. Plates would have been enough, but I even have the friggin’ tea pot Also, it’s a constant reminder of someone neither of us really liked. Now, I could replace it, but I think I’m waiting to move when I will just get rid of it along with all the excess “stuff” we have accumulated over the last 40 years!
Ohhhh! Orchard Glade - I had to look that one up. That certainly was a short run and all out of England when Wedgewood took over production. Apparently it was modeled after another Franciscan pattern that was from their California days. I love the pop of blue.
Thanks. My DS21 works part time in the stock room at Crate and Barrel. I’ll have him ask around a little just to see if we can figure out what they are. It will be a fun hunt!
I still like the Juliana pattern with the blue. There is a place setting, without the mug, $158. That seems high for stoneware, but I will definitely check it out.
Nice to have someone work at crate and barrel
