Chinese 1 Level

Hi, next year I will be attending UChicago as a freshman and plan on continuing my study of Chinese. I will have completed two full years of high school level chinese when I enter in the fall. Calling the first to years completely basic would be an understatement, and although I do go to one of the most rigorous high schools in the nation, many students take Chinese in order to get out of taking a more difficult language(spanish, french and latin are considered more intense at my school for some reason). Anywho, my question is this: would it be wise to just start from scratch at Chinese 1 or try to place up to a higher level? I’m a little worried about the course load so right now I’m thinking a little review for a relatively easy grade wouldn’t hurt. Thanks in advance.

You will take a placement test at the beginning of the year. The results will give you a much better idea about where you stand and thus provide you with important information on which to base your decision. Wait to see how you do on the placement test before you allow yourself to go into full throttle with worrying about which level Chinese to take.
