I recently took the online webtest for Chinese, and I was placed into
Chinese 1BY. I was wondering whether 1BX would be alot harder than 1BY and
whether I could switch to 1BX. I want to switch into 1BX because it seems easier with only 3 units while 1BY is 5 units.

Thanks

Well, if you were placed into 1BY then you should take 1BY. The reason why 1BY is 5 units and 1BX is 3 units is because you are expected to know more in 1BX (and therefore need to learn less).

But, the thing is, i actually do speak Mandarin at home, i just made a mistake on the registration by writing i speak english at home and my parents speak Shanghainese.

The X series is for native speakers. So it doesn’t matter that you put you speak english at home.

The Y series is for people who speak a different dialect. So since you don’t speak accurate mandarin, they probably put you into the Y series. Basically, they’ll just spend more time on pronunciations etc.

Side note: language courses numbered #B are generally only taught in spring, so you will have to wait until spring 2010 to take it, just make sure you don’t forget it all before then

Hmm I wonder how they test you on your dialect since there was no speaking part in the placement test…or I guess they just use the info you gave in the survey.

Yea I just found out the B series isn’t offered in the fall, guess I’m just gonna take 10AX, unless they drop me…
