All the things you said were true, sentient. But i dont see any point of staying at 12th grade for an extra year jus to go to Beijing University…</p>

<p>Besides that, not getting into Bei Da is not the end of the world and as a chinese, you should know that thousands (or millions?) of high school graduates are competing for the few spots in Bei Da. Maybe next year she’ll just mess up like my cousin did (not saying that she’ll get 300s, but i mean that she may not get into Beijing University next year, either.)</p>

<p>In term of jobs and salary and parents expectations, i think most of the chinese are being too materialistic nowadays… and thats not cool…

<p>I agree, she can probably get into a pretty decent school with a ~510, but I guess its her choice in the end… And some Chinese do consider not getting into Bei Da the end of the world, some go as far to commit suicide :(.</p>

<p>About people who commit suicide, im not surprised by that and i dont feel sympathy for them. Not because that i am cold blooded, but b/c these people totally have no goals in life and they were afraid of facing the truth. These ppl with weak personalities like that wouldnt survive in the societies nowadays anyway.</p>

<p>General li, i disagree. most of the people who committed suicide did so not because of their lack of goals, but because of the way the chinese college admissions is set up. so much depended on that one test, and they could not cope with the stress.</p>

<p>…not to mention the reactions from thier “loved ones”…i.e. the whole thing about parents disowning them, possibly abusing them - mentally and/or physically? Then I would have to blame the whole mindset of our culture - where asian parents think that their kid HAS to succeed or the kid isn’t theirs and also thinking that showing their support and love isnt right or even necessary.</p>

<p>Psh. Thank goodness my parents aren’t like that. I would have to also disagree with the general and say I feel sympathy for them.</p>

<p>gxing, same ideas, i think that the reason they commit suicide is b/c their mindset is not right. The stress applied to the test could also be alleviated by the students themselves as well if they have the right goals. I’m not trying to convince anyone here but when i said “no goals in life” i meant to say that they had no right goals in life. When a person like my cousin who also tries to study hard and tries to get in Bei Da its jus not right, ya?</p>
