Chinese college admission

My cousin who lives in Hebei, China recieved his test score last week and the score was… hehe 320/600 … (no comment :()
The four-years college cut-off line this year in Hebei is espeically low, too (380). So, it is VERY disappointing for him b/c he scored belowed the cut-off line two years in a row already…

Now what’s sad is that his mom doesn’t even talk to him any more in their home and no relatives actually tried to talk him through the depression…

My cousin is 20 years old and lives in Qinhuangdao, Hebei and he’s probably going to some technic centers to study in Canton… oh well… Chinese parents…what can you say :frowning:
Now what’s funny is that my grandparents actually told him that if he was admitted to Qing Hua or Bei Da (U of Beijing), they’d pay him full tuition… They weren’t even being realistic at all… How can a person who is on the edge of cut-off line go to these two best colleges in China? geez…

Anyone got relatives in China that has similar experiences?

OMG, missed the cut-off line twice…

several of my friends in China got in TsingHua and Beijing Universities…(they study so hard tho)

my cousin who is a bit younger than me lives in Baotou, China.

He got a 499. I think he will be going to some sort of tech. school / trade school.

My other cousin, on the other hand , will be going to Beida in a few years ^_^

one of my cousins got a 380? the other got a 560.

cousin was ranked 2nd among 2000 people. (yes chinese schools are huge, there are 2k people in 9th grade)

she is aiming for xinhua or bejing but we doubt she will get in…its that competitive in china :(

ps, she studies till 1 in the morning…totally uncomprehensible to me ;/

One of my cousins got a 500 something and the cut off for U of Beijing was just a few points higher I think (520?). She’s going to try again I think.

what kind of test is it(600pt scale)?

My dad got into Bei Da. I don’t know what his score was, but I’m assuming it was pretty high.

i think its 100 per test and ther are 6 tests

4 tests----150 per test
English
Chinese
Math

and “X”(a test with 3 other subjects) if you are a liberal arts student in HS, u take PoliSci, history and geography
if you are a math/science studnet, u take physics, chem and bio

3+x scales depend on what kind of major you are gonna be in. Not necessarily easier for each major, but some provinces do score higher than other provinces, so there’s different cut-off lines.

p.s. surprised me a little bit that BeiDa is only 520 this year. Thought it was higher than that…

sentient, why should your cousin try again? Study another year?! She/he can get into some very decent colleges with 510s…

i think they lowered the scale this year by 20 points because the scores fell below the expected results?

comon guys dont be shy, tell us about your exp or the exp of your relatives in chinese college admission tests…

What about the Japanese? It’s just brutal. Is it the same in China, you just need to get in and then you party?

Oh really? i never really heard about japanese admission exams before. You wouldnt mind to tell us the experience there, would you?

I Apologize that i didnt include the japanese… I didnt know those two systems are similar:(

My dad had to take a similar test out of 600 pts as well in India. Three subjects depending on your major. I think he took Chemistry, Math and Biology. I think he got a 580. Obviously he is a physician now.

From what I’ve been told about the Japanese system from those I’ve worked with, you prepare from the day of birth to get into a top school. Once there you’re guaranteed a great job so the party starts. Now the Japanese economy has gone through some changes, but I think it still holds mostly true.

I heard my mom talking about it on the phone I think, I’m not too familar with the admissions scene in China, so I don’t know how high/low that is (My cousin might’ve scored the 520 and the cut off may have been higher).

My cousin was really bent on going to Bei Da, she was really disappointed with herself afterwards. Before the test she said she was almost positive she would make it in, but afterwards she said she really messed it up…

I guess all this tension is because in China (and many other asian countries) your social status, job, and salary basically depend on the college you graduate from. Plus, there are so many parents that will disown their kids if they don’t get into good schools (although my cousin’s parents were okay with her score).

All the things you said were true, sentient. But i dont see any point of staying at 12th grade for an extra year jus to go to Beijing University…

Besides that, not getting into Bei Da is not the end of the world and as a chinese, you should know that thousands (or millions?) of high school graduates are competing for the few spots in Bei Da. Maybe next year she’ll just mess up like my cousin did (not saying that she’ll get 300s, but i mean that she may not get into Beijing University next year, either.)

In term of jobs and salary and parents expectations, i think most of the chinese are being too materialistic nowadays… and thats not cool…

Sometimes I wonder how different it really is here. Look at the number of kids applying to unrealistic reaches because their parents insist.
