I’ve heard that vandy favors asians somewhat to try and improve their lack of diversity. My GPA has slipped in the last year so that hurt my rank. Im trying to present the fact that I am a well rounded Chinese student that isnt a part of your typical chinese stereotype. If this does not work, I also have scouting interest for soccer from Furman, Carnegie Mellon, Marquette, and Austin College. However, Vandy is my first choice, and I am also applying to Georgia Tech, UT, Rice, UGA, and Wash U st.louis. Major is probably going to be either EE or Computer Science.

decent shot- id apply if i were you. are you a lock? no def not but you’re def in the mix for a spot- and yeah i think being asian may help at vandy (like the only school it will help at)

yeah im retaking the SAT in 3 weeks, so hopefully i’ll have over 1440 or so for cr+m. that should equate to about 2100ish…then im doing the ACT in December. im doing ED on 1/3/09 for sure.

The way i see it, the ACT and SAT are what’s going to overcome my low rank. Then i can add in some rec letters and the essay.

One big fear is that i get accepted ED and they dont offer a good enough scholarship. I can pay full tuition but i dont want to pay anymore than 10k a year since thats about what i would pay to go to Georgia Tech with the HOPE scholarship. Of course i wouldnt pay 40k a year to do electrical engineering at vandy when i could pay 6-9k a year to do it at Tech.

It would be nice to see the profiles of some people that got accepted ED to vandy and the amount of scholarship money that they got.

I think you have a good shot, but your rank and SAT could be higher for a better shot. Especially for such a kid from a “power” school such as Parkview. Haha just kidding. But I think the minority status helps you. I wonder if Asian scholar athletes are hard to come by cause I am one too?

Anyways, if you’re not willing to pay more than 10k a year at Vandy, I would really suggest that you apply RD. That’s the reason why I am not applying ED to any schools - because if you get in, you have to go, even if they don’t offer you financial aid. And since you’re planning to do EE or Computer Science, I would think GT has a better program…dunno I might be wrong. But my very Asian dad would say why do BME at WashU when you can do it at Tech when Tech is ranked higher in BME.

Haha, I am applying to GT, UGA, Rice, Vandy and WashU as well. Best of luck to you in your college apps!

That binding part of ED is such a killer. I heard they’re kinda stingy about the financial aid part too. I wonder if they would let me cancel the ED part of it after i got accepted if i said that i could, under no circumstances, attend vandy. I’m afraid they would screw me over in my other apps though.

I think UGA and GT is a for sure acceptance for me.

Washington U is a really hard one. Rice is about the same as vandy, and i think i can get into UT. I might apply to Tulane as well since my cousin graduated from there this summer and he says its the best party school out there, and i could apply using this free app thing that they sent me

I decided to take the SAT II as well so i can apply to carnegie mellon and cornell just to satisfy my parents

hey, you go to Parkview? I go to Chattahoochee, you guys owned us in football a few weeks ago lol. I’m applying to Vandy too. My brother applied last year, he was a lot like you, wanted to do engineering, about the same class rank and scores as you. You have way better extracurriculars though. My brother was wait-listed regular decision, and he ended up going to Georgia Tech, which is like you said way better for engineering. So I think you have a decent shot at getting in ED. But you said you could pay full tuition, menaing you will almost definitely be paying way more that 10,000 so be very careful about doing early decision. You’ll for sure get into UGA and tech. And since you mentioned carnegie mellon and cornell I’ll tell you my brother also applied to those schools: rejected at cornell, priority wait-list at carnegie mellon.

Wow there’s a lot of georgia high schoolers on this site. so far we got parkview, walton, chattahoochee. yeah i decided last week to not do early decision. i talked to my cousin who graduated from tulane this summer and he said that colleges can be extremely stringy about giving scholarships for early decision since they know that you’re already committed. im retaking the SAT next weekend so hopefully those scores go up, and im also taking the SAT IIs in november, but im not sure which ones other than math I.

dsr, what ethnicity are you? since ive heard asians have a better chance at vandy given their terrible diversity.

i’m white. but also jewish which used to help at vandy but at least as of last year they stopped doing that, they might have stopped before.
yeah i’m pretty sure vandy favors asians. idk if you’ve seen this thread but people were talking about how vandy favors asians, a few people mentioned other groups they’d heard were favored. the vandy admissions person responded to the thread to say that vanderbilt did not give preference to jews. since he didnt say anything about the other groups, i’d assume they are favored.

Yeah you should apply to Tulane. I hear they are actively recruiting students to increase diversity. The free and pretty fast application surely doesn’t hurt, and they are pretty generous with merit aid. I think they are a very underrated school (but that can be a bad thing too).

Yeah I’m a senior at Walton. I think we will finally beat you guys in cross country this year. That Detweiler kid is a monster.

haha yeah brian is one of my best friends and he’s definitely sick as hell. He’s cutting back on soccer for cc so im expecting parkview to take state. Any of you guys know anyone that got into vandy and how much money they got?
i heard that the sticker price for going there is like 45k a year lol.

Yeah dsr, that guy definitely only said jews…but nice knowing there’s at least one school out there that embraces asians
