Chinese Thread

agree. i think most of the chinese can speak 2 different dialects: putonghua and his hometown dialect.

It would be interesting to mess up people wanting to learn Chinese though. They say they want to learn Chinese so you teach them bits of Mandarin, some Cantonese, a few snippets of Shanghainese, some parts of Taiwanese, and all the other dialects. …O_O!!

there s a different, cantonese is not a dialect but another language, included dialects I speak 4 languages of china

^ dang. That’s impressive.

But yes, Cantonese is a whole other language, as is Shanghai-nese (I think), and Taiwanese as in the language spoken by natives.

actually Taiwanese and Shanghainese are seperated languages too, but they are not widely considered so because they are not as influential as Cantonese and Mandarin, and many people in Hongkong and North-America only speak Cantonese. So despite of the technical definition of Cantonese is whether a language or dialect of China, it will be considered a additional skill when it comes to college admission

“actually Taiwanese and Shanghainese are seperated languages too”
Thanks for clearing that up for me. I wasn’t completely sure. =)

my theory is according my English teacher (which I am not sure if its true, but it logicly makes sense), or the words have the suffix -ese, have the state of a recognized language. Why I asked about Cantonese before was about how adcoms judge it

thread #3000 is coming up soon. let’s see who gets the lucky post this time!

good luck with future life tied to this thread

Like I said, I don’t think they would care if you could speak both Cantonese and Mandarin

I can speak English, French, Mandarin, a dialect of Mandarin, and pig latin, but that doesn’t help my chances just because I can speak them.

haha…I think everyone should add pig latin to their list of languages. =D

i can speak a little latin too!

as far as cantonese being a “hook” or additional skill from an american perspective, in the US State Department, cantonese is listed separately from mandarin under languages that are in critical need.

thank you kfc4u, would you mind to give a link to that site?

I just filled out my Common App. They only list “Chinese,” not seperate Mandarin, Cantonese, Shanghai-nese, Taiwanese, etc…

who is the real international students here?

me, Canadian

me. duh, the Chinese represents your race or your language? and how about individual application forms to ivies?

I don’t even remember filling in a language section. As far as I know, they don’t care what languages you can speak - only your race.

That may be true, but that has no relation with college admissions.

It’s for language. I’m not sure if the individual apps for ivies are any different, but I know that Harvard uses the Common App, and I don’t remember filling out what language I speak in the Columbia app.

so how many 2011 are there here?
