Ching Chong! Asians in the Library Song

(Oops, CC, sorry about violating the TOS in my previous effort. The following is officially approved by a mod  )

Last month, a UCLA student posted a rant about Asians on youtube (excruciatingly timed, 2 days after the earthquake/tsunami). Within days, she had taken down her video, apologized at least twice, and withdrawn from school. Too late. Youtube responses blossomed like spring flowers, most of them as dim-witted and heavy-handed as the original.

But there was one response which stood out as billiant satire – deft and humorous, effective without being mean-spirited, a scalpel rather than a sledgehammer.

On youtube, search “ching chong” – it’s the first video, posted by jimmy.

You might also want to watch Ms. Wallace’s original, linked at the end of jimmy’s video. You’ll see just how skillfully we worked her rant into his song.

What a hoot! Jimmy for American Idol!

Yes! Have seen Jimmy’s video and loved it.

What a great response, and he can really sing too! After seeing Miss Wallace’s video, I think there was at least one other thing Jimmy could have joked about besides her makeup…but he kept it “polite.”

I was also surprised that some girls from CA really do talk in the sing-song “valley girl” manner we used to joke about here on the East Coast. I also watched a reponse from an Asian teenager and she sounded the same! Too funny.

I heard about this on npr. They interviewed the guy and he didn’t seem at all mean-spirited. Good for him!

Isn’t he the Asian American satirist rapper from Hawaii?
