Choate's short answer question

“Every year, your summer camp appoints Green Cup Captains for each cabin with the purpose of encouraging roommates to diminish their carbon footprint. Your roommate has been appointed as the Green Cup Captain for your cabin, yet your roommate leaves lights and electronics turned on, does not recycle and even showers for way too long! One of your friends even complains that your cabin will lose the Green Cup competition because of you roommate’s behavior! Tell us EXACTLY how you would address this situation.”

I don’t understand what the admission officers at Choate want out of this question. What do they want to know more about me by asking this question? I mean, if I were in that situation, I’d just simply speak directly to my roommate.
Any ideas from current Choaties or Choate applicants who have finished this question?
Thank you very much.

they want to know how your problem solving skills are.

I did this question already, and when I finished I realized it wasn’t that bad at all
they just want to know your problem-solving and people skills. you know, that you’d maturely talk a situation out instead of just punching someone’s face in. last year there was a question with the same concept, except your roommate was a slob instead. in the end they both come down to solving the same sort of problem, though.

if that’s really what you’d do, then go for for it all the way!
