Chocolate cream cheese frosting?

Does it matter if I use unsweetened chocolate rather than semi sweetened chocolate chips?

I’d rather not run out to the store…

I’ve never made chocolate cream cheese frosting though the thought of it sounds fabulous! I imagine powdered sugar is one of the ingredients, which IMO, should provide enough of the sweet flavor, so I would think it would be fine to use unsweetened chocolate. You’ve got me curious … what are you making to frost … cake, cupcakes? What kind? Maybe I need the recipe :)

I looked up a recipe online and came up with this one that uses unsweetened chocolate so it must be okay! It got a 5/5 rating.

Ingredients:

1/4 cup butter, softened
8 ounces cream cheese, softened
3 ounces (3 squares) unsweetened chocolate, melted
dash of salt
3 cups confectioners’ sugar
1/3 cup half-and-half
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Preparation:

Cream together the butter and cream cheese. Add melted chocolate, salt, sifted confectioners’ sugar, half-and-half, and vanilla. Beat until smooth and spreadable.

fendrock, you’re going to have to add more sugar to compensate, which means you’ll probably have to add more cream cheese to keep the frosting from being too sweet, which makes it less chocolatey…I dunno, how about just making plain cream cheese frosting? Or maybe use some chocolate sauce from the back of the fridge?

Splashmom, that is what I think also, but I was hoping someone could confirm.

I’m planning on using the “Creamy Chocolate Frosting” recipe from Epicurious but of course with the modification of the chocolate.

Today is my daughter’s 17th birthday so I will use it to frost the chocolate cake (recipe for that is from her grandmother).

She’s requested Chicken Pot Pie for dinner. Should be quite cozy with the snow gently falling outside.

SlitheyTove, maybe I will just add enough to make it look chocolate (daughter has explicitly asked that the frosting be chocolate cream cheese).

It all sounds fabulous, fendrock, and I’m sure your DD will appreciate and enjoy it. I hope she has a wonderful birthday!

Splashmom, thanks for passing along that recipe!

You’re the best!

Will go sift some powdered sugar now…
