choice challenge

My son is looking for a school with a good reputation for Computer engineering and Computer Science. We live in Nebraska. He scored a 33 on his ACT and has a 3.8 G.P.A. He is absolutely obsessed with Sciene. The challenge is that due to his high functioning Autism, he has some focus issues. He is brilliant, but it takes him longer than the average student. He is taking 2 AP courses as a Junior (Comp. Science &Physics). He will take Calc. AP, Chem. AP. and Phyics 2 AP. Iowa State is one of the top 3 Comp. engineering schools in the midwest, but it is rather large at 30,000 students. He also loves South Dakota School of Mines because it’s so hands on and personal. Do we send him to a smaller school, where he will get more personalized attention SDSM) 8 hours away, or a school like Iowa State which is larger, but only 3 hours away. This kid is not shy, but is awkward in the brainiac sense. He is bold and quite social.

I’m not sure it is a question of large versus small, or close versus far, but more about the best advising system at a school that offers the right academic fit. Ideally advising would be seamless between the residential/community side and the academic side so any potential issues observed in the classroom, for example, are brought to the attention of a house master or dean of students.

Good point! The challenge is that when trying to recruit, many schools over inflate their descriptions of services they provide. Student reviews will serve us well I guess. Thanks for the input!

I don’t know how active the CC forums are for those schools but you may want to look through posts there about student support. They are located in the Colleges and Universities directory on the left.

Make sure you also look at the Raikes School of Computer Science at UNL . . . we know a kid in it and its a fantastic opportunity.
