Choice: Stay or Transfer?

Hi everyone, I’m facing a big choice right now.

I took 5 community college classes while in High School and earned a 4 on the AP test for US History. This translated to 30.5 UC Units at UC Davis. So I will nearly be a sophomore after this quarter (45 units-sophomore) currently taking 13 units. And I am planning on taking 16-18 units this quarter. I will also be studying abroad this summer in China at Beijing Normal University worth about 12 units. So in total I could have 90 units by the start of next school year which would make me eligible (since I would be in Junior standing) for year-long study abroad at Bejing University (http://eap.ucop.edu/eap/country/china/cnselect.htm).
-If I do this will I still be able to transfer?
-And would it be worth it?
-I could graduate in 3 years at UCDavis double majoring in Economics AND Chinese.
-And does the name of the school really matter for grad/pro school?

I am planning on going to Law School after undergrad and am wondering if not going to a better school like Chicago, Northwestern, Stanford, or elsewhere will have a significant adverse effect on my chances of getting in there.

I noticed on the HLS site (http://www.law.harvard.edu/admissions/jd/colleges.php</a>) that there is only 1 person from UC Davis.

I also posted this in the Transfer Students Discussion forum, any responses would be great, thanks.

Hey! I’m also going to be at BJNU this summer and Bei Da for the next year! And I’m on advanced standing. Wow.

Cool dude! I noticed that you are trying to apply to BJNU/Bei Da directly, I think (but am not 100% sure) that it may be possible to go through the UC program, even though you go to Princeton. Check it out.

-> Highly unlikely due to a massive amount of credits. Once you have 60 credits you just cannot transfer anymore. At least this is true for the top schools where you will have to earn 2 years in residency as well as a fixed number in your major.
-> Not worth transferring now, especially because you have such a great timeline set up.
-> Sounds great to me; what an accomplishment.
-> It will NOT matter that you graduated from UCDavis as much as you really think. At the end of the day it’s all about your GPA, ECs, and for law school: LSATs. I would be worried if I went to a COMMUNITY COLLEGE, but not a four-year, so don’t let this weigh you down.

Good luck with finals, etc. I am also a sophomore in a situation like yours, but I am taking the plunge into transferring to a more competitive college for personal reasons.

I hope you make the right choice!
